Hi guys! Soo it's been a while... mostly cause I kinda left lol. I'm not exactly returning but I came back to this acc for nostalgia and I realized I had a lot of loose ends to tie up. A lot of people were looking forward to this part and I kinda just... left it? Which didn't sit right with me, so I'm back if only to finish this story! I also have a proper goodbye at the end so stick around for that!!
Warning: very ooc. Like very very ooc. I haven't watched a Hermitcraft video in months ;-;
If someone had told Etho two days ago that he would be holding Beef's hand while taking him to his garden, Etho would have laughed, called them an idiot, and speed walked away. But here he was, holding the hand of the man he's loved for years while talking to him about plants.
"What do you do for the plants in the winter?" Blue eyes glittered and stared, making Etho's cheeks burn.
"Uh- I..." Etho knew he was acting like an idiot. Stupid heart. "I put like- bags on them and it keeps them all warm."
"Interesting!" The brunette sent him a large smile and he melted.
"You know, even though there aren't many blooms, it's still insanely pretty out here. It must take a lot of work!"
Etho felt himself blush at the compliment. "Yeah, but I like it."
The pair continued to wander down the winding paths, with Beef complimenting anything that looked remotely nice. Soon, they came across the flower bushes- more like thorn bushes since the majority were barren. At this point, Etho's heart was pounding and he thought he might die of heatstroke from how flustered he was. At the very least, he'd die of embarrassment seeing as his hand was getting increasingly sweaty while still entangled with Beef's. The blue-eyed man didn't seem to notice and instead pointed at the yellow rose and carnation nearby.
"I thought you'd said there weren't many good blooms?"
Etho froze. "Erm well... those are hardly pretty anyway!"
Beef shrugged and went to the yellow rose, gently brushing the soft petals. He let go of Etho's hand, much to Etho's dismay. "If you don't want it, could I have it then?"
"You can have both if you'd like!" Etho was a bit eager to get rid of those bad omens anyway. "Here, let me dethorn that rose."
He took a knife lying haphazardly on the ground and carefully sliced both flowers from their bushes, then slowly cut off all the thorns on the yellow rose. He presented both to Beef, who gently took both with a wide smile.
"Now this is what a flower grown by Etho smells like!" Beef tucked the yellow rose into his hair. "How do I look?"
Etho could barely form a coherent sentence. "Uh- er- good! Very pret- I mean handso- I mean um- nice!"
"Thank you," he said while twirling the yellow carnation in his hands. Etho could almost detect a slight blush on his face. "Say, Etho?"
"Yes?" His heart jumped with excitement, though his brain reasoned it couldn't be what he was hoping for.
"Well, I've been reading up on flower languages and... I think this flower encompasses how I feel about you." He pressed the yellow carnation into Etho's fingers while avoiding his gaze.
"Oh." Etho stared at the flower as he processed that, tears already starting to form in his eyes. "Oh."
Rejection. Disappointment. Hatred.
He knows. He knows and he hates me for it.
It felt like a thorn bush was squeezing his heart as hard as possible. Before he even realized it, Etho was booking it across the garden. His muscle memory carried him to the furthest part of the garden, where he collapsed amongst the trees shaking and sobbing. He told himself he was overreacting, but that didn't stop the tears from flowing and soaking his mask. Etho whipped off the suffocating cloth and laid there, staring at the rustling leaves and shifting grass. The stupid carnation was still in his hand and he hurled it as far as he could. Really, he should've ripped it out of the bush when he still could.
He eventually heard Beef calling for him in the distance, but he didn't have the energy or the willpower to run away again. He just stayed lying there, hoping that he'd somehow be overlooked. But of course, he had no such luck.
"Etho!" Beef came running within view. "Eth-oh."
Etho could tell he was in shock from seeing his face for the first time, but he really couldn't care less. "What."
Beef opened his mouth to speak, then closed it without a word. He opened it again and blurted out, "You're beautiful!"
Despite everything that had happened, Etho felt himself turn red. He didn't trust himself to speak.
"...that wasn't what I meant to say," the brown-haired boy mumbled sheepishly. "What I meant to say was, I got the colors all mixed up."
"Excuse me?" Etho arched an eyebrow.
"I mixed up the meanings for red and yellow." Beef buried his face in his hands as Etho let out a little snort.
"Rule number one of flower language is that yellow equals bad," Etho said, wagging his finger jokingly.
Then it hit him.
"Wait red?!" Etho stared in disbelief as Beef nodded, looking away in embarrassment.
"And I know it's right this time because I looked it up."
Etho felt his heart flutter and his cheeks burn. He suddenly felt very exposed without his mask, and very nervous with Beef staring expectantly.
"Are you sure? You're not joking?" He asked in a whisper.
"Why would I be joking?"
"Because it's just too impossible! I'd never be lucky enough to have the guy I like get a crush on me!!" Etho paled as he realized what he'd just said, and Beef grinned from ear to ear.
He pressed a soft kiss to Etho's cheek and he felt like he was going to spontaneously combust.
"This was actually a pretty good birthday."
You made it!! I hope you liked my very last one shot :3 It was nostalgic to say the least (even though the ending is absolutely horrible). But really guys, thank you so much for everything this dumb little oneshot book has brought. Like, I got hundreds of views on each story. HUNDREDS. For some of them it's thousands!!! It's insane! Hundreds of people have seen my cringy writing! I feel like a mini celebrity lol. It's just encouraged my writing and I appreciate everyone who stuck around to the end :) I really do feel like it's my time to finally leave though, everyone I've known throughout my hermittpad career has left already, it feels like I'm one of the last ones (barely) standing of that little era. I am going to miss you guys so much, and I'm glad I got to get in a proper goodbye. If there are any works or loose ends I forgot about, please leave a comment!! Otherwise, peace out :D
