Red.
It was the awful color that splattered and dripped on the cream-colored walls. It was the color that stained their once clean and bright uniforms. It was the color that gushed out from each stab, kick, punch, and fall to the undead and the living.
Red.
It was the only color they knew.
Dahyun slid her back down on the door as she sat down on the floor with a soft thud.
Dahyun, Mina, and Chaeyoung had just escaped from the herd of zombies they came across in the cafeteria in their search for food and water.
They've been staying in the school grounds for two days now, and their collective supply of snacks and water was running out. So, they decided to step out of the comfort of the classroom to look for food and the rest of their friends.
If they were still alive, that is.
As a result, they were surrounded by zombies, by students, teachers, and staff they once knew. But to survive, they had no choice but to kill them in the end since they were clearly outnumbered. However, with Chaeyoung being the fastest and the smallest, and with Mina being the quietest and the lightest on her feet, they were able to get the food they needed for their daily ratio.
Dahyun, on the other hand, served as their archer and their lookout. After living without her trusty spectacles for months because she accidentally broke her pair during gym class, she finally managed to adjust her eyes to the rather dark and bloody scenes she's witnessed for the past two days.
Or maybe she's gone way too paranoid that anything she sees moving in the shadows is already considered as an enemy to be taken down after all the dead bodies that dropped from her own hand.
Regardless, it helped her navigate and clear their passageways. She could even do clean headshots now that her vision seemed much sharper than it was before. And it was perhaps the biggest contribution she's given to the group.
The trio ended up locking themselves inside another classroom after the rather lengthy chase and game of hide-and-seek with the gools. They just hoped that the sound of the door slamming closed as they entered wasn't heard from an earshot away or they would be doomed.
Putting aside her bow and arrow, Dahyun clutched the collar of her own blouse, popping open a few buttons as she deeply breathed in with each inhale making her heart throb painfully.
Sweat trickled down from her forehead to her neck, mixing with the blood that came in contact with her skin. None of them have taken a proper shower yet, just a few wipes of a towel here and there before they're out scavenging around the vicinity again.
"Unnie, you okay?" Chaeyoung asked breathlessly.
Like her, Mina and Chaeyoung were still busy catching their breaths from the entire marathon they've been through. But they were far more physically fit than her with Mina's years of ballet practices and Chaeyoung's great athletic ability. So, the sight of Dahyun struggling to breathe was worrying them.
"Yeah," Dahyun nodded her head. Her eyes were closed, and her hands were tightly grasping onto her shirt. It was getting harder to breathe now that her anxiety kicked in.
