"Dahyun, you don't have to do this."

Dahyun was marching down the hall with her hands holding up the sides of her skirt and her heels clacking against the tiled floor.

Earlier this afternoon, Dahyun had told Chaeyoung her plans of marrying Jungkook, whom she had allowed to woo and court her for the past two years. But instead of reacting with relief and joy, Chaeyoung held her against her idea and was now tailing her as she briskly walked to her parents' private study to inform them.

"What do you mean?" Dahyun briefly glanced over her shoulder. "My mother is ill, my father is crumbling under pressure, and my brother is too much of a coward to take charge. I have to do something, Chaeyoung. The kingdom isn't going to survive without a ruler."

"Then... then," Chaeyoung stumbled over her own words. "You can become a queen on your own. You've prepared tediously for this. You can achieve anything as long as you put your mind to it, just don't marry without love for god's sake!"

Dahyun paused upon hearing her raise her voice. Chaeyoung was always so expressive. She would gawk, scream, and gasp if that was she felt like doing despite the refined image of the castle staff. So, it wasn't the first time that she's heard her yell, yet it was the first time that her anger and irritation were directed at her.

"You married Prince Jimin during the war. You married him for supplies and protection because we lacked much of it."

Dahyun remained still, her back turned against Chaeyoung while she spoke. There wasn't a single lie within her statements. She did wed him for just that and even agreed to a verbal contract that there will be no strings attached.

Prince Jimin was in an illegitimate relationship with another princess, while Dahyun herself had lingering feelings for a certain royal.

"You're correct, but what does it have to do with my decision now? Will it not be the same case? No one is going to get hurt."

"You." It was a single word, yet Chaeyoung placed much weight to it. "You got hurt. It pained you to see him act intimately with his beloved. Despite having an agreement, you eventually fell for him. You fell for a man that kept with his act."

Dahyun swallowed thickly. She did develop feelings for him, and she did find comfort in him. But she could never admit it. Doing so will leave her with a bruised ego especially after her supposed-love interest left her hanging on the edge.

"You never showed it. You walked out of your chambers with a straight face despite sobbing the night before. I knew it. I was the only person that did. I would always find you crying into your pillow every morning when you didn't have the will to get up."

Dahyun found it incredibly stupid and simple-minded now that she was past that 'heartbreak'. She thought that it was truly a waste for her to waste hours and hours of her nights and mornings crying over a cheating prince, that she instructed the maids to burn and replace every piece of furniture and every article of clothing Jimin had ever touched.
