“So, tell me about this new job!” Esmeralda gushed through the phone as she fixed the paperwork on her desk. She quietly hissed as the baby kicked inside her and she rubbed her growing belly, sending Ryland an email that asked if he was ready for lunch.

“It’s at this restaurant. I’m currently on my break which ends in about five minutes.”

“Let me know where it is. Ryland and I could stop by and have some lunch there.”

“I’ll send you a text.” Maddie spoke before finishing her orange soda.

“Madds,” Maddie looked behind her to see her old dorm neighbor and co-worker, Daniel. “If you’re done, can you come out? Rush hour is about to start.” Maddie nodded and stood up.

“I’ll reserve a table for you and Ryland under his name on my side. Gotta go.” They said their goodbyes, Maddie heading her locker in the back and stuffing her phone in her book-bag after sending Esmeralda a text on the address and putting her white apron back on, headed out. She smoothed her grey and light blue stripped tie she borrowed from Josh as she headed to her side, seeing an elderly couple looking over the menu.

Chase left his car with the valet as the man helped Olivia out and she thanked him, taking Chase’s arm, the two going in to the restaurant. “This is such a cheap place.” Olivia looked around and Chase rolled his eyes, seeing people already waiting to be seated.

“The food here is rather good and it’s a simple place.” Chase sighed before reaching the host. “Table for two.”

“Of course.” He looked through the computer before frowning. He looked behind him seeing a reserved sign on an empty table and went back before finding another seat. He took two menus and pressed a button before setting the menus on the counter and smiled at another waiting couple.

“Hello, follow me to your table.” Daniel walked over and smiled at Chase and Olivia. The two followed him to a table, pulling Olivia’s seat back before setting the menus down and checking on another table.

“Well, at least the people are nice.” Olivia looked up at Chase who was looking through his menu and she rolled her eyes, looking through her menu.

“Reservations for Ryland?” Ryland walked up to the host with Esmeralda and the man smiled, pressing a button as a waitress walked up and showed them to their reserved seats. Ryland and Esmeralda looked through their menu as Maddie walked over and took out her notepad.

“Hey guys.” She looked down at them and the two smiled.

“Hey Maddie, how’s work?” Ryland asked and she shrugged her shoulder.

“Pretty good.” She nodded. She took their drink order before heading back to the bar and told the bartender what drinks she needs. The girl nodded, getting on it as Maddie turned and looked around the other side of the restaurant, seeing people talking and eating before the light tap of the glasses behind her pulled her back and she turned around, taking the two cups and giving them to Esmeralda and Ryland as another table called her over.

“Would that be all?” Daniel asked Chase and Olivia as they ordered their food and Olivia nodded.

“Yes, thank you.” Chase informed him and looked at Olivia who was already looking at him.

“Chase we need to talk about this marriage.” She leaned forward and Chase sighed.

“Why is this so important to you?” Chase asked.

“I already told you.” Olivia smiled.

“I’m not going to marry you Olivia.” Chase took a drink of his water.

“Chase Simmons,” Olivia stared at him. “why don’t you think about the company for a change? Stop thinking about this little fling with that girl and think about the future of the company? What if she leaves you? Who will you pass the company to?” Olivia asked.

“That’s none of your business. “ Chase simply answered. Olivia heavily sighed before she shook her head.

“Chase, mark my words, I will be marrying you. You and that Madeline girl won’t be making it far.” Chase nodded, looking around before seeing Daniel walk over with the food and set their plates in front of them.

“Anything else I could get you guys?” Daniel asked.

“A refill.” Olivia pointed to her cup. Daniel took his cup and walked back to the bar and bumped into Maddie.

“Can you give this cup over to that table? I gotta pick up the food for another table.” Maddie looked over to where Daniel pointed and she sighed heavily, nodding.

She took the cup of strawberry lemonade, walking over and placed the cup down. “Sorry, your waiter needed to take care of some business but if there’s anything else I can get you guys, let me know.” Maddie smiled and Chase looked up at her, standing up.

“Maddie?”

“Is there something wrong, sir?” asked Maddie. People were staring at them by then and Chase looked around before ignoring them and he leaned close to Maddie.

“You know this isn’t what you think it is.” Maddie looked down at Olivia, smiling.

“I hope you’re happy now.” Maddie smiled and looked at Chase. “We’re through.” She turned to Chase and took a step before Chase took her arm and pulled her back.

“Listen to me Madeline,” Chase snapped. “I would never hurt you, especially with her.”

Maddie looked at Chase, shaking her head as she yanked her arm away. “I have work.” She whispered, turning away and going back to her side. Esmeralda stood up as Maddie walked past her and engulfed her in a hug. Maddie froze, her arms suddenly wrapping around Esmeralda on their own.

“Maddie, take a leave, someone will take your place. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Her manager told her and Maddie nodded, pulling away from Esmeralda.

“I won’t be home later, so don’t look for me there.” Esmeralda nodded, Maddie going to the back and talking her uniform off. She pulled her tie off, putting it in her bag before she heard shouting and she shook her head, knowing exactly who was storming toward her.

“Madeline!” She pulled her hoodie out of the locker when she was turned and pressed into the row of lockers roughly. She glared up at Chase who was glared at her, his hands on her shoulders, pressing her into the lockers.

“Will you listen to me?” Chase asked, his voice raised.

“No, like I said, we’re through. I don’t want you anymore so leave me alone!” Maddie yelled, pushing him away and slapping him. Chase stood stunned before watching her grab her bag and pick up her hoodie from the floor.

“I love you.”

Maddie froze in her tracks, her eyes wide before she continued walking, ignoring what Chase had said. She walked home, going in her apartment and closed the door behind her. Jasey walked over, meowing up at her. Maddie looked down at the kitten before she slumped to the floor, her back to the door and let out a choked sob. Jasey curled into Maddie’s side, trying her best to comfort the broken girl.
