It was late, the sun had just set. It would become dark very soon. But it was never really night here in the arena. As soon as the darkness came, the humans lit fires to let the fighting continue even at night. It had become apparent now that our, be it hypothetical, team was not the only one. Every now and then, they would arrange fights where teams met each other. And at the end of each month a unique fight would take place. A fight that included traps, powerful opponents and sometimes even armoured, specially equipped humans. The thought about my upcoming fight against the female dragon was agitating. What tricks would the humans pull? Would they choose a skilled team and pit them against us? Or what if it was at the end of the month? Would they set traps to burn or electrocute us? I had since long lost track of time, and had additionally no idea of how the human calendar differed from ours. Thus, I was always worried.
I needed to relax and get some sleep if I was going to be attentive tomorrow. I tried to forget all worries, about fights, my home, humans and her. I started to think about how she defeated her opponent, and how capable her acid was when penetrating flesh. I really hoped that she truly was on our side. If there was to be any scheming involved, those venomous teeth would make for a gruesome fate to meet.
I tried to recall her looks. I remembered her having a green-ish blue complex, topped with neon green stripes. I'd never seen a dragon like that before, but to be frank, how many dragons had I met in my life? Not many. Especially not female ones. It had mostly been competing males reaching for my territory. I tried to remember details, like the colour of her eyes but my memory was hazy. And she had... Feathers? If I remember correctly she had three sizable, violet feathers peaking out from the edge of her tail. And also one brown tied to a horn behind her ear - I needed to stop. Stop thinking. Get some sleep. I forced myself to sleep that night, in hope to gain even another friend in the morning.
"Blue! Wake up!", Said a tiny voice. "BLUEBERRY WAKE UP YOU LAZY REPTILE!!" William yelled into my left ear. I immediately raised my head and opened my eyes. "What... what's going on?" I asked with my sleepy morning voice as I fought to keep my eyes open. "It's time!" Said William. Then it all hit me. The battle with her, it is today. Don't mess this up. Dusty had picked up on my uneasiness; "Don't worry, all you need to do is to not fight, you can do that, can you?" He said from across his cage. I nodded back.
A click, followed by the sound of twisting cogs confirmed that it was time. I saw the daylight trickle in as the gate slowly rolled open. I was wide awake now. I threw an eye at William, who quickly approached my side. I lowered my head and let him climb up on it, finding a comfortable spot between my horns. I took the first step out to the soft yellowish sand and looked around. The humans applauded, whistled and shouted at me, but my opponent was nowhere to be seen. I took a few more steps out to the arena, and the gate closed behind me. Suddenly, another gate opened and a green dragon entered the sand of the arena. It was her.
She walked closer, and I did the same. I became increasingly concerned that she would not recognise me, yet I needed to keep my defenses down. When meeting in the middle, we walked in circles, inspecting each other with investigating eyes. One wrong move could mean instigating a fight. Her eyes were strained and I could not read them, and the sound from the arena was overwhelming- they were expecting a fight. Tension arose, with none of us saying a word. Then it hit me, it was so obvious. She was scared, just like me. All this time I had been worried of being deceived, not imagining she could be thinking the same. I needed to deescalate the situation quickly, and so I spoke in a friendly manner; "Hi. I'm Blueberry, a friend of Dusty's." William acted quickly and decided to reveal himself, showing her a familiar face as they had met once before. Her eyes softened; "I'm Skyfall." I sat down, and she mirrored me, keeping it calm and sending a message to the audience. They were in turn, disappointed, and made sure to let us know it. Moaning in protest, the crowd directed their anger in different ways. Most simply booed, others threw food, which didn't travel far due to the arena's size. Some intelligent one's turned to speak to the higher ups, while others simply lashed out at the fence, shaking it before returning to their seats. She turned to me; "So... Do you think they will make us a team?" I looked around amidst the chaos; "I don't know."
Time passed. Several uneventful minutes went by with neither of us knowing what would unfold next. The crowd had gotten a hold of itself, and a welcomed silence had arrived. Teaming up was a first one for us both, and it felt strange sitting peacefully in a place tied to such violence. Not fighting out here felt out of place, and I became saddened from the fact that I felt this way.
Suddenly, Skyfall tensed up and arose into a defensive pose. I immediately got up on my feet and joined her. The crowd had broken the silence, a faint mumbling could be heard. "What's going on?" I asked, and as I spoke those words a gate across the arena revealed three vigorous dragons taking flight towards us, ready to strike us down.
