The forest rules

There are three rules you must follow when in a forest.

Never whistle, whether morning or night. It attracts creatures that now know where you are.

If you see something on the distance, no you don't, turn around, look away, walk away. Never, under any circumstances, acknowledge them.

If the forest goes silent, run. For all the animal to stop making sound and moving, it means a dangerous predator is around and most likely already seen you.

I say this everytime the hikers pass through the entrance. A lot of people go missing in this national park every year. But all of them seem to ignore.

The group of the time is composed by five friends, young adults, they are the worst. Don't know how to behave, we have to go around the place to see if they didn't leave trash or vandalized the trail signs.

After I tell them the rules, and to be careful, they leave to the woods.

I continue to do my work and receiving hikers. Periodically walking around the parking lot and at the first few meters of the trail. Just to make sure everything is fine.

Three hours go by. It's my break. I go to the front porch and sit there with my phone. I'm going through social media when I notice the forest went silent. The once sunny sky turned grey and a cold wind start howling. I run inside, close the door and the blinds.

"They are here".

I  just hope the hikers follow my instructions and walk return to the reception, because there's no way I'm going outside to get them.

I can hear steps around the cabin along with weeping. Or at least something trying to mimic a human cry. The sound it's getting further away, which means they are close.

I stop hearing them after a few minutes, but the deadly silence remains.

One by one the animals start appearing again and the cold wind gave place to the summer breeze.

The visitors began to return to their cars, some of them with a weird look on their faces. With the exception for the five friends group. I waited until the sun went down to make sure they didn't just took the longer trail. Nothing. No one has returned yet.

I take the phone and call the cops, they are used to get calls like this.

The searches begin. This park as waterfalls, caves, cliffs and a lot more hazards were reckless people can get die.

But I know what happened.

And their death will remain a mystery forever, along with the bodies lost in the forest.
