Headlights

One thing you always hear when driving at night is to never stop, specially if you are alone.

I live in a neighboring town to my parents, a little over an hour away through an interstate. Traffic is horrible during the day, so I always travel at night, usually around 10 or 11 pm. Most peaceful time.

I'm half away in the road, drumming my fingers to the beat of the music. After taking a turn, I notice some headlights in the distance, high beams to me more precise. It was blinding, making me honk and use the lights to warn the person.

It got to a point where I had to stop in the curb, waiting for the car to pass. But the lights didn't seem to be moving anymore. I started to feel uneasy. What if the person was waiting for me to get closer.

I decide to continue the driving, paying attention for any movement on the other side. Nothing, nothing at all. I see the miles traveled increasing in the dashboard, but the distance between us didn't changed.

I tap for my phone in the passenger seat, taking my eyes off the road for a second to grab it. Once I look back up, the lights are comming full speed at towards me. I swerve the car, almost driving into the trees on the side.

After regaining control, I park in the side to calm down. Laying my head in the steering wheel for a few minutes. When I look back up I see big barriers and a sign saying "road close". I was in the beginning of the interstate.

Did I took the wrong turn, driving in circles for the last hour? Even if I did, the road was empty when I stopped. I pick my phone to call my parents, when something comes up in my peripheral vision.

Two headlights in the distance, this time moving away from me.
