Evelyn already has a beer open when I get home and she had dinner cooking on the stove. She smiles when she sees me walk in so I smile back and grab a beer from the fridge for myself. I snoop through the pans on the stove and she shoos me away so she can get dinner finished without interruption. I just laugh and head upstairs to change out of my work clothes.

I opt for jeans and a tank then pull my hair back in a ponytail and head back downstairs then sit at the table with my beer while Evelyn continues cooking. “How was work?” She asks.

I groan. “David got a job offer in Chicago.” I tell her and take another sip of beer.

“What? Are you serious? But you just got together.” She covers the pan and walks over and sits next to me.

I sigh. “I don’t know. It’s whatever I guess. He’s more than likely going to take it and then I have to get a different job. Maybe I should have went to school.”

“You still can! I mean you only have that one degree but that doesn’t have to define your life career. You could become a doctor or hell even a teacher like me. There is so much you can actually do. I think you should consider it and I’m pretty sure that mom and dad would support your decision. Especially since they don’t like the whole secretary thing. I mean wait until they find out about David.” She widens her eyes and bites her lip.

“Yeah I know, I just don’t know what I want to do. I mean I could go to school for art or something. I suppose but I don’t know how far that will get me. Maybe I can go for engineering and work in construction.” Evelyn and I look at each other and we both shake our heads. “I don’t know. I’ll figure something out I’m sure.”

Evelyn smiles. “It’s not the end of the world just yet. There’s still time.” She gets up and checks on the food again and then plates it and walks over setting the plates down and hands me silverware.

We continue to talk about schooling while we eat, trying to think of something that would fit me better than being a secretary. I have to admit it would be nice for once to be able to call the shots instead of being told what to do. I suppose I could go for something in medicine but that would be a lot of schooling that is going to cost a lot of money. We contemplate it for a bit then move on to the next idea and just keep throwing them back and forth for a bit.

When we finish dinner we quickly clean up our dishes and sit at the table trying to set up the skype on the computer so that we can talk with mom and dad. Evelyn and I argue over what we’re going to put for the name which turns into a laugh attack then we finally decide on something simple and wait for mom and dad to call about the username.

A few minutes later, it’s up and running and mom and dad are on the screen screaming at the computer like they think we can’t hear them. Evelyn tells them that we can so they stop yelling and just keep waving and asking if we can see them.

I can’t stop laughing. “Yes, mom we can see you guys! And we know you can see us because the little box in the corner tells us so.” I tell her and she points to it asking if that’s the one. “Yeah.” I say and look at Evelyn and she just laughs.

“Oh, we wish you guys were here with us! This place is amazing! The food would be nice without the bugs but it’s an experience.” Mom says.

I shake my head. “Mom, that’s the cultural cuisine out there. It’s considered a delicacy. You should be grateful that you get to experience something like that.”
