I didn’t expect that night to move things so much further than we had already been going. Two weeks later, I have my own dresser complete with both work and play clothes. David insisted that I have them though I told him he didn’t have to do that for me but he wouldn’t have it any other way. Evelyn has certainly grown to him as well since he comes over often and we can actually all sit down and have a civil conversation. That is until her boyfriend comes over then we just vacate.
My lunch break today was still two hours away and all I wanted to do was sleep. I rest my head on my fist for a minute and though I try to stay awake I keep dozing off and it gets to the point that I can’t fight it.
“Getting your work done?” I hear and jump up to see David walking by me. He opens the door to his office and I see a smile on his face as he walks in and turns away.
Justin pops his head up over the divider and smiles. “Coffee run?” I nod and stand up and he quickly walks around to meet me and we head out of the office and to the coffee cart. “So, something has been different lately but I can’t quiet put my finger on it. It’s like he went from Mean Scrooge to Nice Scrooge overnight.” Justin’s face lit up and he stares at me with wide eyes. “Oh my god, he’s totally getting some at home.”
I can’t help but laugh. As true as it was, I still play it off like a joke. “Yeah, he has changed hasn’t he?” I say and the line moves up.
Justin narrows his eyes. “You know something.” I glance at him from the corner of my eyes and bite my lips shut and shake my head. “Oh, you totally know something and you aren’t spilling the beans.”
I turn and smile. “Right you are.” I say and we’re finally up at the cart and I place my order then step aside for Justin to do the same. The barista hands me my coffee and I hand him the money and take a sip while Justin gets his.
“Girl you have so got to spill the details. Talk to me.”
I tilt my head like I’m trying to hear something and Justin just stares at me. “You hear that?” I ask.
“I don’t hear anything.”
I smile. “Oh, then they must be the details you aren’t going to get.” I tease and he narrows his eyes at me. We walk back into the office and Justin parts heading back to his desk and I sit down at mine and my phone is already ringing. “Addison Gilbert.” I say as usual.
“Can I be connected to David Wells please?” Madeline’s voice annoyed me so much.
“I’m sorry, he’s currently in a meeting, I can take a message if you’d like.”
“I would like to speak with him in person about what happened at the office that day and I would really appreciate it if he called me back.” She says.
I smile. “Okay, so you no longer wish to have anything to do with him and you would appreciate if he forgot you ever existed. Got it, I’ll get that right to him.” I can hear Madeline cursing as I hang up the phone but the moment the headset is back in its dock, silence stills and I relish in it.
I grab my coffee and stand up then walk into David’s office and sit down in the chair in front of his desk and he turns to me and leans back. “You okay?”
I nod. “Madeline called. She said something about forgetting she even existed or whatever and that she was a loser.” I smile and take a sip of coffee.
