The doctors were right and Evelyn quickly recovered. The bruises are starting to fade but they were still visible the entire week. She was cleared to go back to school so I was able to go back to work and I was happy to be able to get back to the work grind.

I hadn’t seen David in the last couple days since he was so busy working on this new project that took a lot of his time away but we stayed on the phone the entire time, and I’m still not quite sure he got much done then either. I walk into the office and make my way to the coffee stand and order my usual before heading to my desk. I set my things down and walk into David’s office and he looks up and smiles.

“Hey.” I say and sit down taking a sip of coffee.

“Morning.” He says and smiles at me then turns back to his paperwork. “How’s Evelyn doing?”

“She’s doing well, still some bruising but it’s fading enough that she can cover it with make-up and it doesn’t look as bad. Which is good because today is her first day back at school and the less attention focused on her face the better.” I say and take a sip of coffee. Just like old routines.

Until the door opens and a pinstripe pencil skirt sashays her way to David’s desk and nearly shoving her ass in front of me. I look at David and just smile and he shoots me a look but thanks her, I hear her name is Beatrice. She smiles and then turns and raises her eyebrows. “Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you there.”

“Of course you didn’t, I mean see through glass? Is that even a thing?” I say and look at her. In the corner of my eyes I see David staring at me.

Beatrice laughs. “That is funny! You should be a comedian.” She slaps her leg then walks out laughing.

I look at David and smile. “Well she’s just perky isn’t she?”

“We’re not doing this.” He states simply.

“Not doing what?” I ask and smile.

“This jealous girlfriend thing. It’s flattering, really it is, but we’re not doing this.”

I stand up and walk over to him and lean over the desk and plant a kiss on his lips. “Of course not, baby. Why would I be jealous? Have you met me? I’m pretty amazing.” I say and turn walking out and David just laughs.

I sit at my desk and log into my computer and start going through everything to catch up on what I missed but there was nothing. I hear heels clicking their way back and I look up when Beatrice stops next to my desk.

“Oh, I’m sorry was this originally your desk?”

I smile. “Oh, it’s fine.” I log off real quick and stand up grabbing my purse and coffee. “Please, sit.”

Beatrice smiles. “Thanks, sorry about all of the confusion.” She giggles. I just nod and start walking away. “Hey, can I ask you something?” I raise an eyebrow. “You worked with David for a while. Is there anything you can tell me about him?”

I nod. “Do what he asks and he won’t bite your head off.” I smile.

She tangles her fingers together and shifts her weight sticking her hip out. “I meant like, do you know anything about his personal life? Like is he single? It would be totally awkward if I kept flirting with him and he was married or something.” She giggles again. I just narrow my eyes, turn and walk away.
