Three days pass with no word from Sanders about anything with Chicago. David mentioned that he had a meeting with corporate and that he would meet me back at his place after he was done with it and let me go home early.

I’m not sure how much time actually passed, but I had been sitting at the table for quite a while. David finally walks in the door and I look up. He looks at me and sighs then walks over to the couch and drapes his jacket over the back of the couch and walks over. I already know what is coming, but I want to hear him say it.

He walks to the counter and leans against it then runs his hands through his hair. “They didn’t find anything in the budget.” He says and I just bite my cheek. He sighs. “I took the job in Chicago.” I close my eyes and shake my head. “I’m sorry, Addison.” But I remain quiet.

I don’t wake up when my alarm sounds, instead I sleep in and just go in later when everyone else does. Everyone is quiet when I walk in the door and I go straight to my desk and turn on my computer and quickly type up a document then print it out.

I sigh but stand and walk into David’s office. I set down the document in front of him. “My letter of resignation.”

David sighs and stands up. “Addison-“

I hold my hands up. “Stop, David. This is a good thing. You’re going to go to Chicago and create a new life and I’m going to stay here and do the same. If you don’t mind, I’ll get any work done before lunch then I’m going to leave early. I want to get my things from the house. I’ll make sure to leave the key for you.” I say and walk out before he can say anything.

I do as I say and when I’m finished I pack up my things and take my leave. I already said my goodbyes to Justin and I didn’t want to make anything any harder than it already was so I just went home to change before I made my way to David’s for my things.

Evelyn was home waiting for me. When I walked in she grabbed my things from me and we went upstairs to my room and I changed clothes while we talked about what would happen next. I told her I just wanted to get my things and come home so she nods and we both leave and drive to David’s.

We stay silent as we go through and pack all my things. I make sure to clean up whatever I had messed up before we left. I set the key on the counter and we walked out and I locked the door behind me. I put my things in the trunk and Evelyn hops in the driver’s seat and I close my eyes as she drives away so I don’t have to see the house fading away from me.

While Evelyn went to her class, I stayed home and updated my resume and then cleaned the house until it was spotless because I couldn’t just sit and be content. With laundry being the only thing left to do, I finally sit down on the couch and just turn on the TV and watch whatever comes on first. When a commercial comes on, I change out the laundry and put the dried clothes away then went back and sat down.

The doorbell rang and I groaned. I wasn’t in the mood to see anybody except Evelyn. But I get up anyway and walk to the door and open it to see David standing in front of me. I sigh and shake my head. “What are you doing here?” I ask quietly.

“Addison, can we talk please?” He looks at me with those blue eyes. Normally I would melt when he looked at me that way, but this time all I want to do is slam the door in his face.
