We had moved outside since the sun was shining and sat at the patio table on the deck while Bill got the grill heated up so dinner could be started. Madge stood up from her seat and looked at Sheila. “Would you like anything to drink?”
Sheila smiles. “I’ll just have some water. I don’t like to drink before dinner. I might lose control.” She laughs but it’s light and rather annoying.
Madge turns to me and raises her eyebrows. I smile, “do you have tequila?”
“Oh thank god you aren’t one of the stuck up ones. Come on sweetheart, I got shot glasses inside.” I turn to Evan and smile and he leans over and kisses me before I get up and walk arm in arm with Madge. “She has been like that ever since we first met her when he came home for vacation. Have you seen that ring? Oh my god. The one she wanted I could swear belonged to royalty.”
I laugh. “I did see it. ‘Oh it wasn’t the one I wanted but it’s still perfect.’ I mean seriously who does that? I’d be content with a ring pop at least I’d have something to snack on when I’m mad at him and locked in my room.”
Madge laughs and pours the shots for us and holds hers up. “A few more of these and I just might need a pole!”
I can’t contain my laughter. “A few more of these and we just might need a stage.” Madge breaks out into laughter and we both start laughing hysterically for a bit. My eyes start to water and I fall to the ground laughing which make Madge laugh even harder. After a bit we finally calm down and I pull myself up and we down our shots before we break out into laughter again.
We walk out to the patio and Madge sets the water down for Sheila and I take my seat with Madge next to me. Evan and Bill head inside and come out shortly after with the food and start setting everything up. David sits next to Sheila and everything is quiet for a while. I clear my throat and take a drink of beer that I had brought out with me. They actually had beer on tap. How cool is that?
Sheila clears her throat and sits up straight. “So, David tells me that you two used to work together.” I nod. “What did you do?”
“I was his secretary before he went to Chicago.”
“Oh.” She nods. “He also tells me that you two had a thing at one point.” I toss my head back and from the corner of my eye I see Madge look at me. “Is that why you’re with Evan? Because you want to be closer to David?”
“Sweetie-“ David starts but she holds her hand up to him and I raise my eyebrows.
“I mean didn’t you think that maybe they would find you a little desperate getting with the younger brother just after getting with the older one?”
I raise an eyebrow. “You’re swimming into dangerous waters.” I say quietly, but loud enough I know she heard me.
She shrugs. “I’m just saying. It seems a little trashy that you would go from one to the other. Do you just like to keep it in the family?” She lets out that light laughter and all I want to do is smash her face into the table. I bite my lip and my leg starts twitching. “I mean I couldn’t imagine, but if that’s your thing. I’m just glad David was checked before we got together.”
My body moves before I even have a change to think. I grab the glass of beer and spray her with the entirely filled glass. She jumps and her shirt sticks her skin from being soaked. Everything gets quiet and I stand up and lean on the table. “You are going to be walking on rusty fucking nails from this moment on. The next time you open your mouth and speak to me, I will not hesitate to rip your spine out through your throat. Consider this your last warning.”
