My napkin didn’t stand a chance in my grasp. Evan wasn’t late for dinner, but I was still nervous that I was going to get stood up. I can’t stop twisting and pulling at the napkin as the seconds tick by and my leg bounces along with the clock on the wall. I sigh and take a big drink of water and then set it down and go back to torturing the napkin.

“Hey.” I hear behind me and turn around to see Evan walking over. He smiles and then takes a seat in the chair across from me and leans on the table coolly and smiles. “You okay? You look a little on edge.”

I laugh nervously. “Sorry.” I set the napkin down. “I guess I kind of pegged you as the kind to stand your date up.” He raises his eyebrows. “Sorry.” I say again and take another sip of water.

Evan laughs and shakes his head. “I couldn’t stand you up. You’d probably find me and kick my ass.”

I laugh and nod. “Yeah, you’re probably right.”

The waiter comes by and takes our drink orders and then walks away to fill them. Evan looks at me, he leans back in his seat, one arm is resting in his lap while the other rests on the table. “So, would this technically be considered our second date?” I furrow my brows. He smiles. “Well at the fair, we had funnel cake and even danced. I’m pretty sure there was a moment where you wanted to kiss me.”

I laugh. “Oh? You’re sure about that? Because I don’t remember anything like that happening. I remember you stalking me. And somehow getting my sister to like you.” Evan shrugs. “Maybe a hug almost happened.”

“A hug?” He puts his hand over his heart. “I thought we were making progress.”

“I guess you’re going to have to work on your game.”

“I guess so.” Evan smiles and his eyes light up. I bite my lip and try to not make eye contact as my face flushes.

The waiter stops by with our drinks and we place our dinner order. When he walks away, everything stays quiet between Evan and myself for a bit and I suddenly feel awkward and in the spotlight. I hadn’t felt like this since my first date when I was a freshman in high school.

“So, hobbies. I don’t believe we’ve officially established our likenesses.” Evan says. His smile is bright and contagious. I decide I hate him for it.

I sigh and shrug but smile. “I have no hobbies. I work, go to school then babysit Marley. That’s basically about it.”

“Well it looks like I am going to have to change that. Guess I am going to have to loosen you up a bit.”

I raise my eyebrows. “Either that was an innuendo, or you were saying I have no life.” Evan winks. “Oh, so it was both. You know, that kind of hurts that you think I have no life.”

Evan laughs. “Guess I arrived on time, then.” I just stare at him, a smile plastered on my face. Was this really what I wanted to do?

When I walk in the door, Evelyn stares at me from the couch. She raises her eyebrows and I just sigh and walk over and sit next to her and then collapse on the couch and rest my feet in her lap.

                “That bad?” She asks.

I shake my head. “No. It was actually really nice and he was really sweet and even held my door open for me. He asked me out again for a picnic and I said yes but I’m not sure if I want to like him. I actually want to hate him because he’s related to David.”
