The kiss was perfect. It felt almost effortless as Keefe gently moved his hand to her cheek. Sophie’s mind was screaming a million different things all at once.

He’s kissing me!

I can’t believe this is happening

What’s gonna happen now

Grady is gonna be so mad

When Keefe pulled away Sophie’s cheeks were warm and her mouth felt dry with shock.

“That was new,” Keefe said, with a small chuckle. A small snort escaped Sophie’s lips and she quickly covered her mouth. Keefe laughed again. But when his eyes met with Sophie's, a sudden flicker of panic appeared.

“I . . uhh,” Keefe muttered, backing away. And suddenly it felt as though their connection was fading and Sophie panicked.

“That was . . .” 

“I know . . I shouldn’t have done that,” Keefe apologized, ripping his hands through his hair, somehow making him look even cuter . . .Stay focused Sophie!

“No, that’s not what I . .”

“That was way too impulsive of me . . I should’ve. “

“Keefe,” Sophie said, stopping his tirade “You don’t have to apologize.”

“Really?” Keefe asked after a slight hesitation.

“Yeah, I mean . . it wasn’t like I didn’t want you to . .” Sophie trailed off. Why was she always so bad at this??

“So, you’re not creeped out or upset?” Keefe asked shyly.

“No. I’m actually feeling the opposite,” Sophie said. Keefe studied her for a long minute before blushing and rubbing his palm on the back of his neck.

“So, what does that mean?” He asked quietly. Sophie really had no idea. This had never happened before. Until . . how long had it been since her Winnowing Gala? Until . . recently she hadn’t even known she’d liked Keefe, let alone loved him!

“I have absolutely no idea,” Sophie admitted. But, she smiled anyway and shifted so that she could sling her feet over the side of the bed. She barely noticed the pain in her hips and ribs because of all the new revelations running through her head. Keefe rushed to her side and helped her steady her shoulders. When Keefe didn’t let go Sophie lifted her eyes to look at him. His eyes . . . the purest ice blue she’d ever seen. 

I think I’m going crazy

Sophie thought rubbing her temples. She couldn’t even form coherent sentences in her head. The more she thought about it the more confused she got, and she was still tired from whatever the Neverseen had done to her. But she sucked it up and turned to Keefe. His eyes had a certain shine to them Sophie had never noticed and she couldn’t help feel a little embarrassed. This was the boy she had just kissed and here they were once again so close. Sophie suddenly had the urge to close that gap between them and kiss him again but her feet were cemented to the floor. They stood like that for another moment, his hands still resting lightly on her shoulders. The silence wasn’t awkward yet Sophie still felt an itch in her stomach begging her to be brave for once. 

But maybe that was all it was meant to be. A single kiss, just like the one she had shared with Dex.

But no. This one had been different somehow. And maybe because her brain was still foggy or because she was just curious she took a small step forward and kissed Keefe again. Keefe seemed startled at first before kissing her back. He cupped her cheeks and she rested her palms on his chest. Instead of butterflies, Sophie’s stomach errupted with warm fireworks and she felt a warmth spread through her. Something that made her feel content and happy. The kiss was even better than the first cause even though they should be, neither of them was nervous. Sophie pulled away and looked at Keefe in a way she never had before. Keefe’s smirk was perfectly perfect as he studied her face.
