In this corner of the world lay a few small countries on the continent of Rodenius. The small agrarian Qua-Toyne, its barren neighbour, Quila, a barren land whose hardy people eked out a living in the barren desert. Their neighbour, Louria, was in the midst of the civil war, but the rumours that were coming out of the country indicated that one king, Hark Louria the 34th, was slowly but surely winning.

He had constantly blustered, ranted and raved about how there was a need for a "pure" and united Rodenius continent. But as the elven, dwarven and beastmen kingdoms of Qua-Toyne and Quila were primarily those who would have been potentially purged from society, they would not have had it.

After all, the rumours that had filtered out from their expatriate kin who lived in Louria where frightening, to say the least. Mighty forests had reportedly been scoured by a single man, and the former inhabitants were often put to the sword, regardless of gender and age.

Lourain tribes on the border had increasingly grown surly to trade with them, as if they were anticipating the victory of King Hark Louria, and so relations quietly died in the darkness, as they prepared for war.

The extremely old nobility of Qua-Toyne, the dragon elves whose ancestors had ridden on dragons, had begun to wake their dragons and march to the defence of Qua-Toyne, while the Qua-Toynian state troops were quickly recalled to service whereupon the spearmen and archers were quickly given refreshers on how to use their weapons.

Similarly, the beastmen of Quila conscripted the villagers while the dwarves began to increase their stocks of supplies, and prepared to fully disappear from the world. they would take in as man beastmen as they could, before they brought down the gates to their mighty holds, and weather the storm as much as they could. hopefully, the lourians would call it quits and retreat when the winter started.

But they ultimately knew that whatever they would do, if Louria reunited, the number of Peasants, footmen and Knights would drown their ground forces by the sheer weight of numbers. Even if the QUilians wanted to dig in and weather the siege, rumours of black powder weaponry provided by a mysterious benefactor from another region meant that it would have gone from siege fighting to tunnel massacres through liberal use of Lourian fire.

The retainers and advisers predicted they would likely be outnumbered by more than two to one. One person had even believed that they might be outnumbered ten to one, and no one's skills would be able to save them then.

And likewise, there was only so much the dragons could do, as a large horde of wyverns would drown the dragon's attempts to fight off a horde. And if that were the case, the old nobility, or the dragon princes, would be less than willing to commit their forces and dragons. ALready, there was a divide amongst the dragon princes over how much they really wanted to donate, even though it was a existential crisis for both.

But little did they know, help was on the way, just in the most unlikely of manners.

Principality of Qua-Toyne

2nd November 1639

5th wyvern division

Amongst the smaller wyvern corps of Qua-Toyne, they knew that they would have to hold the fight down first before the Dragon princess came. If they would come. Regardless, they knew that Prime Minister Kanata had been quietly devising an evacuation plan. They would take as many people as they could on the boats and run away, anywhere as long as they were not persecuted.

And so, Wyvern rider Marl Patima was currently on patrol. Using a figure-of-eight patrol formations, he and his wyvern squadron slowly flew over the castle city of Maihark, a way of reassuring the people that they were safe. For now, at least.

"They say that the evacuation fleet is almost ready, isn't it!" called his partner Wally Junge, as his wyvern flew in formation.

"Just in time too, I heard that King Hark has almost fully unified Louria, and the peace process amongst the Lourian lords is now being hashed out. If he lives up to his name, Ejei and Gim will fall before the dragon princes can get off their arses, and then they will have a straight shot for Maihark, and then we'll all be screwed.' he said, as suddenly, the magicom buzzed.

"Earl? What's going on?" he asked, as one of the coastal watchmen suddenly hailed him, evidently an airborne threat was inbound from the sea!

"Something's coming! It's not flapping its wings! You should see it now!" yelled the watchman, as moments later, they heard a whirring sound coming from the direction of the ocean. Immediately, they moved in to investigate, only to find that the flying organism was a lot faster than they thought it would be.

The watchman was right, it was not flapping its wings, rather, there were four things on the wings that seemed to be propelling it. The thing, whatever it was, had grey skin and seemed to be ambling along.

What was bizarre, however, was on its wings and the sides of the metallic beast. On one side, it seemed to be a red circle that surrounded the white circle inside. On the wing, however, it was a lion with a wing, surrounded by stars.

"It's no good, it's ascending to out of our combat-effective range! Alert the Maihark garrison knights. NOW !" yelled Marl, as down below, he could make out the tiny figures of the farmers running from the fields and re-entering the fort city, while he could make out the low clanging of the bells calling the Maihark sea guard to arms.

Maihark knights garrison

"Fall In, fall in!" yelled sword-mistress Ine, as the Maihark sea guard marksmen began to array themselves on the castle wall.

"Draw!" she yelled, as the archers knocked an arrow, and raised it at the flying thing.

Some of the sea guards, in a never-before-seen panic, fired their arrow, predictably missing the flying thing. Whatever it was, it simply kept ascending and eventually disappeared into the bright blue skies, far out of sight.

"All right, lower, we won't be able to hit it, besides, it's leaving our airspace anyway," she called, as the garrison lowered their bows, wondering what had happened. She would have to ask the captains to discipline the silly rookies who panicked

If she could remember correctly, there were rumours that places such as the Holy Mirishial Empire and the country of Mu had giant flying ships. But therein lay the question, they were so far away, so what was this thing doing here?

As the repurposed A-400 left the airspace of Qua-Toyne, the elven denizens could not help but wonder as the contrails of the thing began to vanish away into oblivion.

What was that?
