"So, Mr President, we can initiate a recruitment campaign for the military, bolster the reserves at the very least. This could also prevent any of the countries nearby from getting any funny ideas. At the very minimum, the home guard has to be bolstered with the recruitment. " said Chief of the European Armed Forces, General Julian Battersby.
"General. The reason we should initiate a recruitment is...?" asked the president, groaning at the thought of the impact on the budget.
" Well, according to the satellites, there are other nations who may have reached the industrial age. We might have to consider the presence of nuclear weaponry." said analyst Annette Durand, as she passed around photos of the other continents, some of whom had a rather large amount of carbon emissions detected.
"Okay, General, the recruitment drive has been authorised by the member states of the council,
And they will attempt to deliver, but keep it reasonable, preferable twenty thousand now. We still need to ensure there is money for everything else." said the Chancellor, thinking of how badly the budget would be affected.
"I will ensure it is not to extreme, Mr. Chancellor."As they left the room, President Norman couldn't help but sigh and rub his eyes. If it happened the next year, there was an offhand chance that his successor would have been the one who would have to deal with it.
But all was not lost. First, the medical services had all reported that there was a lack of any sorts of weird diseases that they had not faced before. Not only that, Air Marshall Beauchamp reported that there was a few countries near them, and that they were sending a delegation over. It was a shame about the Lourian empire, who turned away Ambassador John Moussa, a French ambassador of Senegalese origin .He later told President Norman that the Lourians were racist enough that made the heckling he faced in his youth look trivial in comparison.
Beside that , was the issue of the economy. It was actually doing okay, as production was still running , although a downturn would have to be expected since consumption would be lowered, as would production and investment.
But there was a pressing concern, they never were self-sufficient for food, even in the days of old, they still required food imports, especially for some of the more exotic food, and frankly, the stockpiles were not particularly large, and even with rationing, the food might run out within two weeks, and then there would be riots, and then the flame of the European federation would be snuffed out barely a decade after it was established.
"Hey Amilia, anything else on the schedule?" he asked his secretary.
"Ah, Ambassador Parker has brought the delegation of the nearby country with him, he will be here in about ten minutes ,and Senate leader Portheau says the council is considering lightening up on the curfew," said his secretary.
"Okay, tell her I will see them in an hour and a half. " said the president, as he adjusted his tie. Right, time to get to business.
Moments later, ambassador parker came into the office, along with two anachronistically dressed elves.
"Mr Chancellor, I have the delegation from Qua-Toyne, Ambassador Sir Yagou, and foreign minister Matara. Gentlemen, this is Chancellor Norman Fitzgerald. Mr Chancellor, sir, I will leave it to you." said the ambassador , as he turned around and left.
"Well, gentlemen, welcome to the Chancellor's palace. Now, Ambassador Parker has filled you in on the basic details, now, it's a matter of what you can offer us, and in turn, what we can offer you." said Chancellor Fitzgerald.
