CHAPTER 02:: OUT OF THE WAY
Present Time
"Oh, Camilo didn't get one, he wants one, but I think that he's never going to get one---" Mirabel teases badly but was immediately cut off by Abuela. "Mirabel!" but before Alma could scold her granddaughter, Mirabel runs as fast as lightning, avoiding Abuela's endless scolding. Abuela rolls her eyes and sighs in frustration. She then proceeds to guide the people in decorating la Casita. Camilo smiles awkwardly as he looks down to see the disappointed yet pitiful look of the kids.
"You didn't get a gift?"
Camilo opens his mouth, about to tell the cold yet harsh truth but a guy cuts them off, holding a basket filled with supplies, they look like props of some sort. It was Osvaldo, delivering the pieces that Tío Bruno had ordered. "Camilo? Delivery! Your Tío Bruno ordered this last week and asked me to give you the "special" since you're the only Madrigal kid with no gift. I call it the "not special" special. Since uh, since you have no gift." Osvaldo smiled politely as Camilo forces out a polite gesture with the kids staring at him, "really subtle, but thanks." Osvaldo pats his shoulder, about to walk away but immediately remembers to wish his luck to Antonio.
"And tell Antonio good luck! The last two gift ceremonies were a bummer," he wanders but immediately returns, "Last two being yours that did not work out and one where you ruined Mirabel's," he chuckles as he leaves. Young Cecilia looks at Camilo, giving him a pity pat on the back, "If I was you, I'd be really sad."
Camilo swallows as he gives an optimistic smile to his peers, "Worry not little ones! As Hernando said in 'Hernando and Gorge: The Sequel, Act 2, Line 45' gift or no gift, I am just as special as the rest of my family."
Camilo looks at Casita to see his hardworking, talented relatives helping around, doing amazing things with their amazing gifts. Their voices flooding asking for instructions and opinions from the other members. The kids look at Camilo as if he was delusional.
"Maybe your real gift is acting."
"It's like he can shapeshift his feelings," the kids whisper among themselves, with Camilo trying to hide the fact that he can hear every word. He thinks to himself as he looks at la casa filled with flowers and wonderful decorations.
Camilo says goodbye to the kids and enters the house to see the townspeople busy helping the Madrigals. Abuela orders everything to be perfect, Mirabel and Luisa run around following Abuela's demands, Isabela adds exotic decorations, and Tía Julieta steams up the kitchen with the amazing smell of homemade food that can reach the courtyard of the house. Camilo walks aimlessly, entranced by the hardworking people around him when he suddenly bumps into a singing Dolores, practicing for her brother's birthday. She raises an eyebrow at the huge amount of props covering the identity of the person. She looks to the side to see Camilo, her mood shifts, and rolls her eyes at the teenager.
