After I screamed, fog began to fill the room as Alec attempted to use his gift to disorient the oncoming vampires.

It crept, and it was effective against the vampires that came into contact with it, but the fog simply wasn't moving fast enough to keep up with onslaught of enemies.

"It's too slow," Demetri said, stating the obvious as he and Felix began taking off heads of the vampires who had staggered into Alec's fog.

"We'll have to do something else," Felix said grimly, taking out a wild vampire while just narrowly avoiding falling into the fog himself.

"Felix," Jane snapped, "what is our best course of action?"

Alec and I joined Felix and Demetri, taking out enemies as they continued to push their way into the room. So far, we were up against thirty newborns, and there were still many more out in the hall.

Jane, on the other hand, stepped away from the fight and hovered by the fireplace.

"Alec," Felix commanded, taking control of the rapidly unfolding clusterfuck we were in, "spread the fog to your left and right instead of forward. We can use it as a moat to slow them down and disorient them.

"Taking away their senses just long enough to confuse them," Alec nodded and complied.

"Just enough to give us the upper hand," Felix said. "Focus on keeping the moat consistent and slowing them down; Demetri and I will taken them out as they get to the other side."

"What about me?" I asked frantically as I took off another head.

"Go back and with Jane," Felix said.

I opened my mouth to protest, but I saw the look in his eye when we glanced at each other. We didn't have time for my back sass.

I doubled back and took my place in front of Jane by the fireplace, ready to protect her from anyone who managed to get through. I was bitter that I was being pulled from the fight, but I knew it was within everyone's best interest for me to shut up and take orders. I was an untrained, impulsive newborn - hardly any better than the barbarous creatures before us. Had I not been accepted in a coven before I turned I could have just as easily been on the other side of the moat.

I anxiously watched the men fight, still furious that I was placed in the corner. More vampires staggered through the doors, there had to have been about fifty newborns total, and the guys continued to fight relentlessly. I knew Felix and Demetri were talented, but they were horribly outnumbered, and they were barely keeping their heads above water even with the moat of fog in place.

"We need to help them," I said to Jane, my voice low and urgent.

"No, we don't. They have it under control," she said coolly, although I could see uncertainty in her eyes.

I knew her. She'd die before admitting that she'd made a mistake.

Jane and I stood around like a couple of assholes for a few more moments before I simply couldn't take it any longer.

"I'm going to go in," I said after a newborn swiped a little to close to Demetri's face. "They need all the help they can get."

"Felix said—"

"I don't care," I snapped. "We're a team, and they need us. You can stay put, but I'd rather go down fighting than standing here watching our people get killed in combat."

Jane's eyes widened as she stared at me, but she didn't argue or try to stop me.

I threw myself at the edge of the fog and began picking off newborns, completely focusing on the task at hand. Felix would be more than welcome to tear me a new one if we managed to make it out of Romania alive. Until then, he had no choice but to suck it up and accept my help.

More vampires stumbled through the fog, and more and more got closer to getting through the moat at the same time. Felix, Demetri and I were close to being unable to keep up.

Just then, two newborns managed to get through the fog right in front of me. I was taken off guard and froze. I was completely overwhelmed.

As both crouched down to pounce at me, one fell to the ground and began writhing around in pain.

I snapped back to my sense and launched myself at the other one, taking its head off just before it could get mine. I turned around to address the other one but, to my surprise, Jane was lined up with the rest of us, tossing the decapitated head of the other vampire to the side.

Alec saw his sister get involved in the fight and lined up, as well, before beginning to pick off vampires with the rest of us.

We worked as cleanly and as swiftly as we could, exterminating newborns while keeping an eye out for each other's backs. We had been making good progress, and the room was beginning to clear out, but then a new wave of them began pouring into the room.

"Christ! How many are there?" I cried.

"This isn't going to work," Demetri said.

"Brute force isn't going to get us through this," Alec said.

"Any other bright ideas?" Demetri asked.

We continued to pick off vampires, unwilling to give up despite the odds, when I was struck with a novel idea.

"Let's burn this motherfucker to the ground!"
