When Alec's fog evaporated, leaving Violet unrestrained and exposed, the rest of the group stood several yards away, on full alert, and waited expectantly. They knew Violet wouldn't be pleased when she rose, but they had no idea to what magnitude.
Violet lay perfectly still, without breathing or blinking, staring at the sky as if she was still under the veil.
The group became increasingly uneasy as the seconds ticked by and Violet continued to fail to move. She wasn't hurt, and she certainly wasn't dead.
So, what the hell was she doing?
Demetri shifted his weight to take a step toward Violet, but upon noticing this, Alec stepped forward instead, approaching her with less caution and care than the situation realistically warranted.
When Alec stepped within a yard of Violet, a low rumble began deep within her chest. Although she was still laying deathly still, Alec could see that her pupils were as wide a saucers, and that there was no life behind them.
Alec stopped in his tracks as the rumbling from Violet's chest continued. He stood there and stared until the rumbling began to grow louder. In response, he took several steps backward, but the sound continued to escalate.
Alec backed up until he rejoined his group, and they all continued to observe Violet uneasily.
The rumbling escalated in volume until it evolved into a low, guttural growl.
"Violet?" Alec asked with uncertainty.
Upon hearing his voice, Violet slowly turned her head to the side. She stared at the Volturi soldiers from where she lay on the ground, her eyes wide, and devoid of life.
The growling persisted steadily as she stared vacantly at them, until her lips curled over her teeth. The growling continued to escalate further; it hitched up to octave as she slowly sat up, her limbs limp like a rag doll, and kept her eyes locked on the group.
Her rumpled, inky black hair fell into her face and wildly tumbled past her shoulders as she climbed to her feet. She sank into a crouch and shifted her stance to face the group head on.
Her eyes weren't vacant any longer. They were brimming with rage, and hate. There was no civility in her expression.
Felix and Demetri stepped forward, angling their bodies so the twins were tucked behind them as Violet continued to crouch and glare, occasionally ripping a snarl through her teeth.
Her demeanor was antagonistic, unpredictable, and downright feral.
"Something tells me we may have pushed her too far," Felix said, deadpan, without taking his eyes off of Violet.
Violet, upon hearing Felix's voice, roared at the group before charging at them head on.
Alec and Jane immediately ran for cover; their gifts were what protected them from a majority of attacks, however, it was also was got them in backed into this corner first place. Alec knew that if they used their gifts again it would be about just as effective as throwing napalm on an bonfire.
The twins swiftly found a spot on the roof of a nearby home, and huddled together to watch the fight unfold on the street beneath them.
Violet, undeterred by Jane and Alec's abrupt exit, continued her trajectory toward Felix and Demetri at full speed. Felix and Demetri, steeled by centuries of experience in the battlefield, coolly jumped out of Violet's way in opposite directions just before she reached them. As she passed, they each snatched her by an arm and jerked them back behind her.
Violet struggled against the Felix and Demetri as they yanked her arms and roughly pinned them behind her back. They had almost completely subdued her as they leaned their weight into her from both sides, when Violet's body began to shake.
Hissing and spitting, Violet shoved her arms outward and regained a little control, although she was only able to shift her arms by a few inches. Her newborn strength was extraordinary but, even so, there was only so much she could manage against two full grown men who were crushing their entire weight against her. Violet shoved her arms outward again, gaining another few inches, and then a few more.
Felix and Demetri exerted more force as they struggled to keep her restrained, when Violet let out another roar and shoved back at them, that time expending a strong blast of vibrations outward from her body. The force of the soundwaves sent Felix and Demetri sailing backwards, into walls of the buildings on either side of the street.
Walls buckled and glass broke as Violet's supersonic blast brutalized the structures that stood within a twenty foot radius of her.
Without missing a beat, Violet fled into the woods before Felix or Demetri could get back on their feet and attempt to take her on again.
"Damn it," Jane grimaced as dust and snow blew through the night.
"Do you think it was too soon to change her, sister?" Alec asked her sarcastically. He was in awe; he couldn't believe how quickly the situation had spiraled out of their control.
Jane shot Alec a look of deep annoyance. "You and Demetri going to have to go after her."
"I can catch her myself," Alec said, miffed by the mere suggestion.
"We don't have all night. Demetri will be able to track her down, even if she mutes herself, and you are the one can subdue her the most effectively. I'm not trying to play games with you right now, brother. I'm trying to get the raging newborn under control before she does something unforgivable."
Alec quit trying to argue. He knew she was right.
"Felix and I will continue on to the nest while you and Demetri go collect Violet. Meet us there, at the edge of the village located at foot of the castle, and the five of us will advance on the nest together."
"Yes," Alec replied simply.
"Put your differences aside," Jane advised her brother stoically. "Your feelings don't matter right now. The only thing that does is getting Violet back under control. You're more than welcome to agonize over your crumbling relationship once we get home. Now isn't the time for it."
