Reckless

Chapter 6

I got no sleep last night. My throat is hoarse from Cam grabbing me and when I look in the mirror I see bruises from where his fingers had a hold of me. I sigh and continue to apply my make-up to hide it while I get ready for work.

            When I'm finished I grab my things and head out, making sure to lock the door before I leave. I have half a mind to head back in and grab clothes so I can stay with my mom tonight but I decide against it.

            I pull into the parking lot for work and park in the first spot I see then make my way in. I don't look at anybody, I just keep my head down and make my way to the elevator.  I climb on when it arrives and I stand staring at the metallic doors at the girl in front of me. She doesn't look happy. She doesn't look sad. She looks angered.

            The elevator comes to a stop and I make my way to my office but am quickly stopped by Opal who has my morning coffee and some folders. She smiles when she sees me so I put on my best smile and approach her. "Good morning. This is for you." She hands me the coffee cup. "Also, Mr. Mason and the other Mr. Mason have requested you, and you are going to need these." She hands me the folders.

            "Thank you, Opal. Were there any messages at all for me?" I ask her and glance at the folders.

            "Nothing yet, Ms. Parks." She is silent for a bit and when I look up at her, her face expresses shock. "I'm sorry, but what on earth happened to your neck?" She asked.

            I shut the folders and glare at her. "Thank you, Opal. You may go back to your desk." I tell her and she just looks at me then turns and heads back.

            I sigh and cover my neck with my hand and turn making my way to meet with Eric and Jeremy. I find them in the conference room as they usually are when it comes to something new and I quickly enter and sit down in the chair across from Eric and next to Jeremy.

            Eric smiles at me and leans on the desk. "Well, I have some good news for you two. After speaking with our other lawyers and since the expansion is on schedule, we have decided to make Jeremy CEO of the new expansion, and Ms. Parks, the Head Attorney for any cases with that expansion. Once construction is finished, both of you will be moved to the new office, as well as your assistants and any employees that wish to switch over. I will be posting job requests for any applicants and we will start interviews just before construction is finished. So, what do you think?"

            I stare at Eric. Was he serious? I was doing just fine working away from Jeremy and now I get stuck working directly with him. I can't say no to the job, so I smile and nod. Jeremy smiles at both of us and stands up. "Dad, I can't thank you enough for this." He says. Eric stands and gives Jeremy a big hug. "It means a lot and I really appreciate it."

            "You've worked hard, son. You've help build this company and now, with this expansion, you can add your own touch. One day, Mason Enterprises won't be secluded to Chicago and we will be all over the map." Eric said. He looks at me. "What do you say, Alexis?"

            I stand up. "Sir, it would be such an honor. Although, I've only been here for such a short time, are you sure you really want me and not somebody more experienced?"

            Eric walks over to me and grabs my hands. I notice Jeremy staring, his eyes locked on something and his eyes are narrowed. I just look at Eric and smile. "Sweetheart, you are one of the best lawyers we've had here at Mason. Nobody has ever talked to Jeb Henry the way you did and got away with it. We are sure that we want you for this new expansion."
