Nellie sat down in a chair as she waited to board the Transporter, a sort of ship that can travel between the Giants world, Retsnom, and Earth.
Only a few people were in the loading area with her. An old man probably in his 60’s was reading a book a few seats from her. And the other two appeared to be a couple, whom were talking quietly amongst themselves, laughing and smiling as there conversation became interesting.
She took a deep breath trying to calm her nerves. She’d been to Retsnom many times and she knew the giants were very friendly creatures. But this would be the first time she’d be going without her parents. And this time . . . she wouldn’t be coming back.
After their deaths she moved in with her aunt Claire and her family. All 10 of them not including her aunt and her husband Steve. It was complete chaos to say the least. And since she was an only child growing up she was completely overwhelmed. She hadn’t even been able to make it to the one month anniversary of her parent’s deaths before she was starting to contemplate the other option. It was either live with her aunt’s family or the Holland’s family, close family friends. The Holland’s household seemed like a much better option at the time.
After talking to her aunt and Mrs. Holland, over the phone, it was agreed upton that Nellie would leave and go live with Mrs. Holland and her family.
So now here she was at the airport in the Transporter terminal. She looked up just in as the ticket lady said, “All departing for Retsnom please get in line and present me with your ticket.”
Grabbing her bag and getting in line she’d ended up in line behind the couple and the old man shuffled into line behind her. She handed the women her ticket when it was her turn and the women smiled at her saying, “Hope you have a nice trip.”
Smiling, she replied, “Thanks.” Smiling was completely forced now, nothing natural about it. On occasion she’d find something funny and laugh but she’d soon be brought back to reality and her depressing mood would settle in again.
She would often cried alone in her room at her aunts. It was impossible to have any privacy in that house and the need to try and “act” happy all the time was exhausting. She spent a good part of her 20 something days that she was living there in her room.
Walking the short distance into the Transporter, Nellie was instantly overwhelmed with fear as the door was shut behind her and the rest of the passengers. The small chamber with only ten seats began to compress as it readied itself for takeoff. Sitting in her seat, Nellie quickly buckled herself and closed her eyes dreading what was to come.
A slight nudge woke Nellie and she looked up to see the old man looking at her a slight smile on his mouth, “We’ve arrived young lady. It's probably best to get up now.”
“Oh, yes, of course.” she quickly grabbed her bag and followed the old man off the transporter to the airport.
As soon as she stepped off the loading dock she was greeted by a loud, booming chorus of “Hello Nellie!”
Flinching in her mind at the sound she quickly planted her biggest smile on her face and looked up . . . and up . . . and up at the Holland’s family. This consisted of Dr. H, Mrs. H, Colton, and Owen.
“Hey guys!” she practically had to yell back at them with all the noise from the busy airport was making.
Nellie was scared she couldn’t deny that. She looked down at the bag in her hand and twisted the strap nervously. No matter how used to giants you get you never truly get used to their size. She looked up at them again just as Mrs. Holland asked, “Are you ready?”
“Yes!” Nellie replied pumping as much enthusiasm as she could. The giant women before her had the nicest smile, perfect white teeth accentuated by her bright red lipstick. Her straight blonde hair was shoulder length and curled under her chin.
She gulped as a giant hand came at her without warning. She felt her stomach drop as gravity fought against her while she was raised quickly up high into the air.
“Owen!” Mrs. H practically screeched in fear and shock. “You have to ask her first!”
“Oh whoops,” the little boy said. “Can I pick you up?” Nellie focused on his face, his dark brown eyes were big and round with hope. The tiny human girl looked over at Mrs. H who was frowning down at her, eyes full of concern.
“Um, sure Owen, it’s alright. Just don’t lift me so quickly okay?”
The boy smiled at the small girl and said excitedly, “Okay!”
She felt her whole body shaking with fear now. She couldn’t help it. It had been at least three years since her last visit and even then she was a little afraid of being picked up. It was always her mother that calmed her nerves. She was alone now and it terrified her.
Upon feeling her little shivering body in his hand, Owen looked down at Nellie with concern. He brought her up close to his face and whispered, “Are you cold?”
She couldn’t stop her quivering form as she replied, “Um . . . no.”
“Oh am I scaring you?” he whispered again.
He turned her so she was facing him and he could tell by the look in her tiny eyes that she was. He fought back his sadness as he pulled her away from him slowly until she was his full arm’s length in front of him. This made her even more scared though just dangling 50 feet above the ground.
She clasped on to the boys index finger in pure fright. She let out a whimper just loud enough for Owen to look even more worried and Colton to look down and notice her shaking body in his little brothers hand.
She looked up at the giant Colton. Her old best friend from when they were children. He was no longer as short as his brother once was she even noted that he’d grown taller than his dad. She also noted that he was bent over as he walked looking down trying to get a better look at her. Concern appeared in his brow and he brought his giant hand up under Owen’s as he said, “Bro, you’re scaring her like that. What if you drop her?”
At his words Colton noticed Nellie whimper once more right before she went completely still and slumped forward unconscious.
His parents were totally oblivious talking to each other walking a good ten feet in front of him and his brother. With a sigh he told his brother, “Give her to me okay? I know you wouldn’t hurt her but I think you’ve held her enough for today, understand?”
His brother nodded quickly up in down and he, a little too quickly, brought his hand down into his older brothers hand and transferred the tiny girl into his brothers much larger and stronger hands.
Colton stood up no longer hunched over and brought his other hand up for extra support as he leaned his old friend against his chest. Her unconscious body was slumped against the soft material of his shirt as the group walked the rest of the way to the car.
