Remember you all have school tomorrow.” Delilah smiled happily, as if nothing in the world could turn her frown upside down.
But all three of the people under the age of 18 in the room were all groaning with dread.
“Remember you all have school tomorrow.” Delilah smiled happily, as if nothing in the world could turn her frown upside down.
But all three of the people under the age of 18 in the room were all groaning with dread.
“Nellie I don’t know if Colton has taken the time to explain this to you yet but at Chemallen Final School there are separate facilities for humans. I’m pretty sure they configured an old air duct system to be the halls and class room but I’m not sure. Is that what it is Colton?”
With a mouthful of oatmeal in his mouth, it took Colton a moment to chew and swallow before he answered.
He didn’t look too pleased but he spoke his knowledge willfully, “Yeah, it’s something like that. They did use the old air ducts but reinforced them to accommodate for classrooms and halls and such. The main hall connecting their classes are the above a set of lockers in our main hallway. There is a window so we can all see each other in the halls. Then there are two elevators leading down to the ground. It’s designed so there won’t be any “accidents” with the humans and Retsnomians. There is very little interaction between everyone.
“There had been some incidents with humans getting picked up or picked on. So they thought it’d just be smart to separate everyone. There are areas were everyone can be together and interact, but they are hardly ever used.”
He took another heaping spoonful of cinnamon-maple oatmeal before going into further detail.
“What about the bus system?” Delilah prompted after she tried to think of anything he hadn’t mentioned.
He swallowed the contents in his mouth he said, “Um, there are steps that descend to the ground and another elevator that you ride so that you’re near the ceiling of the bus. Again there are glass windows separating you from us so there won’t be any complications.”
“Alright.” Nellie looked down at her bowl of oatmeal and slashed it around with her spoon. “Are there a lot of other humans?”
She looked up to Colton, sitting right beside her and saw him staring at the ceiling in thought. “Hmmmm . . . one, two, three,” he was using his fingers to count. “9 . . . 10, I think there is 10 and with you that’ll be 11, unless any of them dropped out or left.”
“Greatttt, I’m so looking forward to this.” Nellie rolled her eyes and reluctantly forced another spoonful of oatmeal into her mouth. She’d lost her appetite the second the S-word entered the conversation.
Owen stuck his tongue out at me. “I don’t want to go to school either. Mom! Can you homeschool us? Please! Please!” Owen was jumping up and down in his seat with so much energy, he made the table shake with his movements. Nellie grabbed her cup and one edge of her tiny table to steady herself.
“Owen, honey be still.” Delilah shook her head and continued, “I don’t have the education to properly teach you guys and plus I have a full time job.”
“You only work part-time at the Florist shop.” Owen stated accusingly.
“Anddddd I’m a mom. That is two part-time jobs, which equals a full job.”
Owen looked down at his hands, confused as he counted on his fingers.
“So, Nellie do you have any more questions?” the smile on Delilah’s face was almost too happy, like an animatronic robot with a permanent facial expression.
