Chaeyoung blinked her eyes, trying to adjust to the sunlight streaming into the room. Her vision was blurry, and she struggled to make out the figure sitting next to her. After a moment, she finally recognised who it was.
"You're the last person I expected to see when I wake up," Chaeyoung said in a weak voice, her surprise evident.
"You're as tough as a rock even after a six-hour surgery," Hajoon said, admiring her resilience. "How are you feeling?"
"I feel like I came back to life," Chaeyoung tried to smile, her voice filled with gratitude.
"You must have been a good person. You got a kidney on a silver platter," Hajoon remarked, his tone light yet sincere.
"Hajoon-shi!" Chaeyoung called, a hint of urgency in her voice. "Can I ask you a favour?"
"Of course," He responded without hesitation.
"Can you look into the donor? I want to know who it is," She asked, her eyes pleading.
"I've already tried, but no use. They said it's patient confidentiality," Hajoon explained, his frustration evident.
"I feel bad that I'm healthy thanks to them, but I can't even thank them," Chaeyoung said, her voice tinged with guilt.
"Don't worry about it," He smiled reassuringly. "We'll find them sooner or later."
Just then, Jeongyeon and Nayeon rushed into the room, their faces lighting up with relief and joy.
"Chaeyoung-ah! You're up," they exclaimed in unison.
"I'll leave you with your friends," Hajoon said, standing up. "Call me if you need anything."
As Hajoon left, the room filled with an atmosphere of concern. Jeongyeon and Nayeon had been sick with worry about Chaeyoung, and now that she was awake, their emotions were a mixture of joy and lingering anxiety. Deep down, Chaeyoung was troubled. Who was it that had donated their kidney without asking for anything in return? Her thoughts were interrupted by Jeongyeon's tense voice, which immediately put her on edge.
"What's wrong, unnie?" Chaeyoung asked.
"If ever Jihyo comes to see you, call someone; don't stay alone with her, okay?" Jeongyeon said
"Why? What happened?"
"She tried to stop the transplant. She didn't want you to heal," Nayeon said.
"Stop joking around. It's not even funny," Chaeyoung chuckled, but when she looked carefully at the girls, she understood they were serious. "W-why would she do that?" Chaeyoung asked, pained.
Nayeon told the whole story about how Jihyo was hysterical over Chaeyoung and Suga's marriage. Chaeyoung couldn't believe her ears; she couldn't believe that her friend and teammate had tried to harm her. The betrayal cut deep, and with a heavy heart, Chaeyoung laid back, trying to shift the conversation.
"Where is that bastard?" Chaeyoung raised her voice. "I almost died. Why didn't he show up?"
"Dowan said he'd find him. In the meantime, you have to take care of yourself, okay?" Jeongyeon said, her voice gentle but firm.
The room fell silent as Chaeyoung processed everything, her mind swirling with questions and emotions. The realisation that someone she trusted had tried to hurt her was overwhelming, but surrounded by friends who genuinely cared, she felt a glimmer of hope. Despite the pain and confusion, she knew she had to stay strong and protect herself, no matter what.
