"I'm asking you to trust me on this-" She understood his position for she sighed. "Maybe there is one more thing... we can burn the bodies- that's the least we can do." In a silent agreement, they gathered the dead, spilled oil and lit them on fire. A while passed, as they watched what would soon become nothing more than remains.
Their deed accomplished, they extinguished the flames, and backtracked out of the maintenance shafts and onto platform level, leaving behind a grim sight. The station was deserted, for it was in use only during campus hours. They reached the barricade in no time; two unused subway cars were stationed, blocking the path across the rest of the underground passageway.
"The tunnel goes on for a little over 9 miles." She stated. "It's going to be a long way before we get to Stoneville."
"I'm getting used to walking long distance." He replied, before climbing to the top of one of the cars. She followed him shortly after, and proceeded across to the other side. A reddish glow reflected upon the lower section of the tunnel walls, alongside the outer part of the rails; the emergency lights being the only light source available, a rather dark path greeted them.
Several minutes passed, as they continued on. An unsettling silence filled the area, with the occasional humming of small generators, scattered across the lengthy tunnel. Several emergency lights seemed to malfunction, flickering on and off, some producing hazardous sparks. She remained at short distance behind him; her heartbeat fastening, her eyes peeled, she remained on alert. They continued on, and eventually reached a small platform with a door.
"ST-02 MR039." She read on a sign; she pulled out of her pocket, a small rusty key.
"What's in there?" He inquired.
"Something inhumane..." She answered, as she tried unlocking the door. A frustrated expression waved across her face; no matter how many times she tried, the lock refused to give in. The door won't open... how the hell did she make it out?
"There's a loose panel right here." He pointed out a small opening, next to the door. "Chewed on from the inside it looks like. You hid something of yours in there?" He asked, as both a sarcastic comment, and a legitimate question.
"..." She owed him at least one explanation., and knew there was no point in keeping this a secret. "Behind this door, is a small storage room-" Few moments passed, before she continued on.
"Some kind of vaccine was being developed down at the Chemical Plant, about six months ago." She explained. "Three dogs were subjected to the trial injection: two of them died within days, one survived without any apparent complications."
"Lexi was her name." She continued. "For the next few weeks, she seemed to be doing fine, but slowly, she started becoming more and more aggressive. The staff in charge of the development were eventually unable to even approach her; she was no longer eating, and she seemed to have become very sensitive to light." She paused.
"The head of the project opted to put her down, for the safety of his team, but an undisclosed Umbrella contact, ordered Lexi's relocation instead." Her expression frowned, as she shook her head. "A specific location was selected: an isolated, blocked off and dark area, where she could be kept alive. One person was assigned here, in order to continue the development of the vaccine... Or so I was told."
"That storage room was modified, into a kennel like cell, and a camera was installed, to continue monitoring Lexi's behavior." She continued. "The whole project lasted for about three more months, until it was eventually shut down, for some reasons." She concluded. "She was left here- I guess they expected for her to eventually die, yet she survived, and found a way out of her cell." She examined the panel; many claw marks could be seen, one side completely ripped.
"What do you think made her escape from the kennel?" He wondered.
"I'm not sure... Her animal instinct might have led her to her escape. She needed to hunt for food, in order to survive- maybe she smelled nearby rats or... the guards..." She answered truthfully. "If she managed to chew her way out, through cement and metal, she probably did the same thing to get inside the Maintenance Room."
"Something doesn't make sense." Billy replied; the thought of someone purposefully releasing her crossed his mind. "If she had that much strength to get out of her cell, I'm pretty sure she could've jump past those cars and easily chewed her way through the barricade, and onto the platforms... During school hours, there'd be a lot of fresh food." The very thought repulsed him. "Someone let her out."
