She couldn't deny the possibility of Lexi's escape being part of Umbrella's twisted work. "You have a valid point." She agreed. "That's probably what that poor guard was hearing."
"So someone else was in the shafts with us." He concluded. "Probably one of the staff assigned to that project."
"I don't think so." Strangely enough, she never lost trust in those working on the project, and was positive they had nothing to do with the event that had just happened. This undisclosed contact however, she had a hunch was the one responsible for the dog's escape. And as far as she knew, Jase might even be the one behind it all.
"I knew the team well enough: they might've worked for Umbrella, but they honestly thought they were doing something good. The project was described as the development of a cure, meant to help with the increase in rabies cases... Any further involvement with the company would be far beyond their pay grade." Although her response seemed genuine, he retained a dubious expression.
"Believe what you want, but that's the truth." She walked away, pressing on, down the still long way ahead. A little over three hours passed, for they finally reached Oaksen Station.
"What is this!?" She exclaimed. Blocking the way to the platforms and exit, was a double steel shutter, with seemingly no way to unlock it.
"I though you knew about this?" He inquired. "Makes sense to have both sides blocked off, don't you think-"
"I was told there'd just be a fence with a numeric padlock." She replied.
"Looks like it was installed a long time ago too." He took a look at the rusty rolling barrel; a worn mechanism and tattered slats provided a weak barricade. "A few kicks and we might be able to break through- but that would make a lot of noise-"
"And we don't want that." She let out a frustrated sigh. "We need a way around." Her eyes scrutinized their surroundings. Moments passed.
"Over there." She pointed at a vent. "It has to connect to the maintenance shafts."
"What if it doesn't?" Although this was a logical alternative, he remained skeptical. "Could lead to the sewers, or worse-"
"It's better than to just stand here." She retorted. "Besides, we don't really have any other options, now do we?"
With little point in arguing, and nowhere else to go, all he could do was to continue cooperating with her, until they could reach street level. With him in the lead, they proceeded with caution, down the ventilation shaft, and eventually reached the end; a swift look around, before kicking down the vent cover.
"Looks like you were right." Billy commented, as he scouted the area; the coast clear, he jumped down the narrow hallway. "This place looks just like the Maintenance shafts." A hand reaching up to her, he helped her down. "Let's just hope the guards are kept at minimum." They were still at risk of getting caught.
Unfamiliar with the surroundings, they continued down the only path, to eventually reach a set of stairs leading up to a door with no handle knob, and a sign reading: Maple Street Access Point 02.
Dammit!! Her mind uttered in frustration. "There's no way to unlock it, and that's definitely the way out- Maple Street is where we'd end up if we went from the platform exit."
"That's a lever gate door- it's not locked." Billy stated, as he joined her side. "It doesn't work like a normal door, and can be opened from either side, with a lever handle. See that hole right here? That's how it opens. Problem is, we don't have the handle."
"And we're so damn close..." She placed a hand upon her forehead.
"Might be laying around somewhere- Let's have a look." He suggested, as he pat her on the shoulder, a hopeful look that luck would come their way. Backtracking to where they came from, they noticed an array of lockers blocking a rusty doorway. "Nothing in those." He stated, as he took a look inside.
"There might be something in there though." She pointed at a blocked door. Using all his strength, he tried budging one of the rusty lockers; barely able to move it, he allowed nonetheless to free a tight space, big enough for her to fit through. Fortunately for them, the door was unlocked.
"Be careful in there." He warned her, as she squeezed inside, pulling from her bag, a small flashlight.
Several minutes passed, a worrisome look on his face for he called her name, but received no answer, and could no longer see the beam from her flashlight.
"Everything alright in there?" He tried in vain, to fit through the narrow space. "Anaka?" He remained without a response from her.
