She took a sip, before sitting back down. The room ambience had shifted from somewhat relaxing, to a certain coldness. He could see her struggle; now his turn to feel regret for demanding the truth.
"I don't need to know more-" His tone and expression were far softer then what she had seen so far. "Right now, we need to get some rest, and focus on getting inside that hospital tomorrow." Her eyes narrowed, a splitting headache taking over. "I'm serious- just take it easy for now." His concern was genuine.
"And what about you?" She received a puzzled look.
"What do you mean?" He titled his head. Her answer wasn't prompt. She stood back up, her stance keyed up.
"You made it out of Raccoon City-" She locked eyes with him. "So what's next?" He had no clear answer.
"I stick around a bit longer-" He responded. "If I can help you find those kids-" His eyes creased. "Then I'll have done something worth of value... for what's left of my life."
"You were-" She hesitated, as she recalled the second half of his file. "You were framed, weren't you?" He sniggered.
"I did get a hold of the full report, the real one..." She lowered her gaze. "But I only showed you a partial file... I'm sorry-"
"Don't be." He cut her off, and regained her focus. "What's done is done, and there's nothing I can do to change that." His freedom, his life had ended on that tragic day, taking the blame for another man's fucked up ego, with no way out of the fate that awaited him. "But tell me one thing-" His eyes pierced through hers, a thought jolted. "How did you get the full report?" She remained silent.
"You know what?" He shook his head, and smiled. "You can tell me over a drink- once this is all over... how about that?" She mirrored his warm expression, and nodded in agreement. He made himself comfortable on the couch, leaving her with a nice bed to rest on.
The remaining few hours of the night flew by, neither of them able to get much sleep. Tossing and turning, both struggling to grasp the situation they were in; uncertain about what would come next, they could only focus on one step at a time, and see where it would lead them first. They were greeted by a misty morning, the air humid and somewhat unpleasant.
"Didn't sleep much did you?" He saw her rubbed her face, her exhausted state unchanged.
"Neither did you-" She too, noticed his similar appearance. 7:30... time to go. She glimpsed at her watch. She stood up, tidied her clothes, and pulled a set of cards from her bag. "This should get us - well me, at least - inside the hospital." He gave her a puzzled look, unsure of what she meant be that. "The hospital's on temporary closedown- at least most of it... about a fifth remains operational, for absolute emergency cases only- and the staff is said to be closely monitored... I was made aware of that fact just a little before we left... for renovation and expansion reasons they say." They both knew this was only a false front for something much deeper.
"So you get in-" He weighed her words. "What do you want me to do in the meantime?" She thought for a second.
"Well-" There was a possible way for him to go with her, if she was correct about one specific factor. "There is a nurse working there-" His eyes narrowed. "If I'm right about this, she should be scheduled today- and I have a feeling she'd be more than happy to welcome you in-"
"Meaning?" He knew full well where this was going. Their eyes locked with one another. "Planning on using me as bait?" She replied with a smirk. She gathered a few more things, and headed for the door.
"Ready?" He nodded in response.
They left momentarily, waving at the owner on their way out. They proceeded to the hospital; one stop along the way, as they grabbed something to eat. Few residents were out and about, the streets rather deserted, with the occasional bystanders reading the local newspaper. Stoneville was indeed much smaller than Raccoon City, but very similar in both style and funding; Umbrella definitely had their hands on this town as well, their insignia found on passing trams.
"Here we are." They eventually arrived at their destination; a large building surrounded by a limestone fence, some minor damage showing its age.
Oaksford Caelum... She brushed a hand against the bronze plaque. Her eyes scowled.
