One step closer to learning the truth about the boy once under her care, one closer to unraveling the fate of the missing teenagers; she had finally made it to Stoneville, yet a heavy feeling crushed her very core. She had come this far, but would it be worth all the efforts; uncertainty consumed her mind, an ache still hammering in her head.
"You sure you wanna go in?" He was quick to pick up on her doubts. She closed her eyes, took a deep breathe, and pulled out one of the many cards in her possession.
"I have no choice, but I won't lie to you-" Her tone was low, her expression that of dismay. "It terrifies me to no end..." She feared the horrors that may await them, afraid she might be too late to save those kids. He could find no words to comfort her, for he was also aware of the reality they might have to face. He gave her a small pat on the back, and gestured towards the main entrance.
They walked in, only to be greeted by a void; there were no staff at the reception desk, and only one man was sitting in the waiting hall. Something seemed off; the air was chilled, the lighting dim and green in hue. She glimpsed in direction of the only person around; the man had the look of a mercenary, his expression that of a person who had seen the worst in life. A tattered bandage covered his right arm, scratches and fresh blood all over his skin and clothes.
Whether or not he had acknowledged their presence, he did not move, his eyes staring dead at the wall.
"You wait right here." Billy whispered. A hand on his weapon, he hounded towards the man; his eyes scrutinized him, as to detect any potential danger. "Hey-" He hushed. Standing a short distance from of the injured man, he simply looked at him. His face was pale, his eyes unblinking; his breathing sounded short and shaky, his body appeared tensed and shocked. Few moments passed.
"I had-" The man spoke, his gaze remained on the wall. "I had to kill them... I had to..." Billy's expression frowned; the man moved only slightly, a hand reaching for his weapon.
"Take it easy-" Billy hushed, as he pulled out his own; he took a few steps back, his handgun pointed right at the man. He remained calmed, but he could feel his composure slowly drifting away. "Just take it easy..." The man placed the barrel against his temple, his eyes finally locking with Billy's.
"I won't end up like them- I won't-" His body shivered, and in an instant, he pulled the trigger. Blood splattered all over the wall behind him. Billy stood in shock, a reaction mirrored by Anaka.
"What - the - fuck!?" She could find no other words, her eyes wide and appalled. She approached him, her steps hesitant. "What made him do this?" She couldn't look away from the mess.
"He said-" Billy's eyes creased. "He said he had to kill them... and that... and that he wouldn't end up like them..." Drops of sweet slithered down the side of his face, his mind storming with flashes from his last mission; the sound of machine guns and screams, the ground soaked in blood, innocent lives destroyed within seconds.
"Billy...?" She refocused her attention to him; she could see the pain on his face, his body shivering from his recollections. "Hey..." She reached for his hands, and lowered his weapon. He remained unresponsive, his eyes absorbed by the deadly sight. A while passed, neither of them moving from where they stood.
"... blood-" He finally spoke. "There's blood over there." He pointed towards the elevator. She noticed the drops leading from the shaft to the now dead man. She refocused on Billy; eyes closed, he took in a deep breathe.
"...Billy?" He put away his handgun.
"I'm ok-" He turned to face her. "Sorry about that... I just-"
"I understand-" She reassured him. "Let's just... take a few moments-" Her words were caught short, by a familiar ring echoing across the hall. They both turned in direction of the sound; the elevator numbers lite up one by one, to eventually stopped on ground floor. There was another ring, followed by the doors opening. He pulled out his weapon; his grip firm, as he aimed towards them.
