Several minutes passed, neither of them moving from their position, and not a single word exchanged. A silence filled the room, only disturbed by the sound of coming rain. Anaka eventually walked to the window; her gaze unfocused, her eyes simply following the drops slithering down the glass.
"Looks like we got here just in time." Billy eventually broke the soundless void. "I prefer keeping myself dry." His usual self came through. Anaka remained silent, but answered with a soft smile. A knock was heard; his stance reflecting caution, as he hounded to the door. She gestured for him to stand down, while she reached for the lock. Another knock followed.
"It's me-" The voice was familiar. "Don't mean to bother you- but there's something I forgot to give you." Their eyes locked with one another, a nod in agreement before she opened the door.
"Sorry about that- I hope I didn't wake you up!" The owner appeared genuinely concerned.
"Don't worry about it." She replied with a reassuring smile.
"I forgot to give you this when you booked in- a girl came by earlier today, and left this for an Anaka - young with beautiful gray eyes-" He handed her the paper bag. "Again- I'm really sorry to be bothering you like that- you two look tired, so I'll just leave you alone-"
"It's no bother, really." She answered with honesty, as it had also slipped her mind. "And I appreciate you bringing it up to me." Her bright expression dissipated the man's worries. He took his leave momentarily.
"Everything seems to be in here." Good job Mae! She took a look at the content. "Here-" She pulled out some clothes and a few essentials. "That's for you."
"Now that I could use!" He exclaimed. "But ladies first- you go on ahead, I can wait." She took on the offer, and waste no time getting in the shower. She only spent a few minutes in there, but it still offered her some much needed refreshment.
"You can take off the bandages if you want-" She pulled out a first aid kit. "I'll patch you up again if needed." He replied with a nod, proceeded in, and came back out a while later.
"How did that feel?" She noticed the redness of his injuries.
"The shower was great, but these-" He winced, as he looked at his arms and hands. "It burned like hell!"
"I thought as much. Here-" She gestured towards the bed. "Let me have a look." He sat down, and kept his arms stretched for her to better work. There were no sign of infection, but the combination of water and soap removed some of the cicatrizing skin. Her eyes creased with regret, from her suggestion to remove the bandages prior to jumping in the shower.
"Don't worry about it-" He noticed her frowned expression. "It's not like it's gonna keep hurting." The antiseptic had already began to take effect, the burning sensation slowly fading. Some time passed, both remained in silence.
"About Umbrella-" She eventually spoke. Some explaining was overdue, but she wasn't sure where to even begin. There was just so much information, so many weird occurrences she had witnessed. But she owed him as much.
"Look- it can wait a bit-" He hushed.
"No- She shook her head. "I promised I would tell you everything once we got here-" She took a deep breathe, and stretched her shoulders to release tension.
"I moved to Raccoon City a little over four years ago- I was fresh out of university, with a bachelor's degree in Biology." She opened up to him. "I needed a break, some time away from studying and just- life in general... so I moved away, and ending up finding work at the hospital. They were short on staff, and found my qualifications sufficient enough." She paused.
"Someone took interest in me- not sure who to be honest- and I ended up being offered some additional training." There was a flicker in her eyes. "Two years in medical sciences, and another three in pediatrics- technically not official studies, I still earned my second year fellowship for the latter." Her expression frowned.
"There was one condition for all of this though-" She recoiled. "I had to sign an agreement with a certain corporation."
"Umbrella." He guessed right, for she sighed.
"If I knew then, what I know now-" She closed her eyes; her jaw tightened, her posture stiffened. "People talk- walls have ears- and leaks start popping out. That's how I learned about Lexi and the so called cure project."
"See, the first two years working at the hospital seemed pretty normal." She stood up, and went to grab drinks from the paper bag. "But soon after-" She handed him one. "Everything became clear..."
