One mention of homophobic slur
No one POV
"Hey, Jack...Saturday I'm gonna have a party and you're invited. Maybe you can bring your friend..."
the girl turned around and looked at Sonny who was walking towards them.
"Thanks, Sally. We'll be there" Jack smiled and the girl returned it, mostly to Sonny.
"Someone has an admirer..." Jack teased while doing their secret handshake.
"Not sure man...Sally is cool but I don't really know her"
"Well Saturday we go" Jack ended and walked to their next class."For some reason, I want to try weed..." Sonny said out of nowhere while they were hanging out in Jack's room before the party.
"Maybe at the party there's some...ask Sally"
"Jack stop. She's nice but I don't think she's my type" Sonny turned serious.
"Ok jeez"
The party was a typical house party, nothing new so the two boys made their way to the kitchen.
"You made it!"
Sally went to hug them.
"We are here..." Jack awkwardly said while pouring some tequila.
The night went on and they danced, drank, played beer pong and even tried weed.
When Jack stumbled out of the bathroom, he searched for Sonny but people were saying around that he went upstairs with Sally.
For some reason, he felt sick and not cause of all the shit he had in his body.
He felt like throwing up, a burning feeling in his stomach and a lump in his throat.
And it got worse when he saw a drunk Sonny making out with Sally.
He wasn't jealous but he didn't feel happy either.
But he should have been though, his best friend finally had a girl but his body refused to be happy.
From there, things moved pretty fastly...Sonny and Sally got together and became the cute but not disgusting couple of the school even though Jack felt sick every time.
They were 24/7 together, one on top of another and at this point, Jack was part of the background in Sonny's life.
They still hung together but things changed cause all they talked about, all Sonny talked about was Sally and how great she was.
So maybe the problem was Jack, maybe he just felt single.
So Jack found a girlfriend.
She was a girl from his science class, not wild and popular like Sally but she was nice.
When he told Sonny the words 'me and Monica hang out' his first reaction was 'as friends?' and the reply was just 'no'
"Nice, let's do a double date".They did a double date but the two friends had their eyes on everything but the girls.
They probably were too unaware to notice but whenever Jack met Sonny's gaze, he felt guilty to be there with Monica and vice versa.
Call it brotherly love or just love, Sonny didn't have that with Sally and Jack wondered what he was doing with Monica.
But no one dared talk about it.
They just kept being best friends as they always did even though something changed. One day Sonny insisted to go out and spend time with Jack, it's been a while and Sonny wanted an only boys' night.
"Where are we going?"
"Trust me and turn left here"
Jack just followed and they arrived in front of a bar.
"Let's go"
Sonny grabbed his hand and dragged him inside.
"A couple of shots" the curly boy ordered.
"Wait Monica is calling me, maybe it's important"
"No, it's a boys' night and Monica is not a boy. If it's important she will text"
Jack looked one last time at the phone then turned it off.
They chucked down the shots and started to dance even though they were the only ones on the dance floor.
"Are you ok?" Jack asked into Sonny's ear.
"Yeah, why shouldn't I be?" The boy replied while jumping around.
"Oh my god! I love this song!" Sonny screamed once 'more than a woman' played.
Jack looked at his best friend dancing around with heart eyes, what would he do without him.
"You have to dance with me"
Sonny dragged him closer by the waist and they swung together, their bodies close as possible.
"I'm happy to be here-"
"Shhh" Jack shushed Sonny with his fingers.
He knew what he was gonna say already.
Not even a thousand poems would be able to describe the tension, the desire that evaporated from their bodies.
Jack never felt himself with others, just with him but he knew they couldn't give in...
Sonny caressed his cheek and Jack wanted to say 'fuck it' but the voices of Monica, of his parents, of the whole world, were screaming 'faggot'.
"I can't" Jack said before leaving the bar.
Sonny chased him confused by what could have possibly gone wrong.
"Jack..."
"Sonny, we can't do this! I-I want to, I just want that...but we can't"
A weight settled on Jack's chest.
"Jack..."
"What is wrong with me?" The boy cried desperately.
"Look at me"
Jack refused to but Sonny made him to.
"It's ok. Nothing is wrong with you..."
and Sonny kissed him.
Jack wanted to pull away but he couldn't, his body refused to.
They rested their foreheads against each other, happy but also a secret. So they hung out a lot more after that night, they were actually dates but no one had to know.
Monica and Sally tried to get their attention but without success, they were in the past already.
"Jack, wanna do something today?"
"Sorry...promised Sonny to help him with something"
"Ok enough. I'm tired of you ignoring me" Monica protested.
"I get that he's your best friend but I'm your girlfriend..."
"If you get it them we wouldn't have this conversation" Jack dryly replied.
He never speaks like that but he can't stand when people assume things about his friendships.
"Jack, you've been ignoring me for weeks"
"Sonny needs me" Jack simply said and left."Monica is being a pain in the ass" Jack sighed once Sonny got in the car.
"Good to see you too and no it doesn't bother me that the first thing you said is about your girlfriend" Sonny sassed.
"I'm sorry..."
Jack kissed his cheek after checking if someone was watching.
They drove to a lake, it was a small one but they needed a quiet place away from the chaos.
Just the two of them was more than enough.
"Sally didn't say anything?" Jack asked, his legs around Sonny's waist, both their bodies immersed in the limpid water.
"Jack..."
Sonny didn't want to talk about her or them, it was their moment.
"What?"
Sonny got out from the water and wrapped a towel around himself.
"What did I say?"
Jack followed him on the shore.
"I don't want to hear their names when it's just you and me..."
Sonny started playing with a strand of grass.
"...I don't want to picture her doing the things I can do to you..."
Jack looked at him then sat down and engulfed him.
"She's not you..."
"But still she has the right"
Jack understood what he was saying, it was a different type of 'jealousy'.
They stayed in each other's arms in silence, the sound of nature filling it.
Everyone could see they were in love and it was impossible to deny it, even Monica knew it was the truth. But she didn't think about anyone except for her.
It didn't feel like a heartbreak but she saw it like one and couldn't just stay there watching.
So the next day, she told everyone the truth, the news spread like an oceanic earthquake, silent but destructive.
"Fuck you"
Sally slapped Sonny as soon as she saw him and the whole school was watching the scene as they were at the movies.
The fairytale they built crumbled even before they found out what was going on.
People started to judge them, not for cheating cause that happens often in high school but for who they were...
Jack's fear became reality and he wanted to curl up and just stay alone but Sonny didn't join him.
He disappeared leaving Jack dealing with it alone.
They weren't a secret anymore but not happy either.___________________________________
