You pick up the mobile in your cold hands, noticing that it seemed to be a much older model that was probably only capable of texting and calls. It reminded you of a burner phone that was used to mask locations. In your mind that made perfect sense.
Creatures that lived in this world much like Jason perhaps needed a source of communication to other beings. You felt sick to your stomach when you thought about what these creatures could possibly be masking in plain sight.
Your hands shake slightly, elated yet fearful for what you had found. Your body freezes, unable to think and move.
The dog comes closer, clearing its throat to try and grab your attention.
Nothing, eyes focused solely on the device wrapped under your fingers.
" What are you waiting for?"
Staring intensely at the mobile in your hands you try to find a way to power it up, acting on your own volition. You hadn't even heard the monster beside you speak, falling on deaf ears as your movements become more desperate to find an answer.
ANY answer at all.
You make your way over to the worn down and damp looking couch nearby, sitting down despite the cold and waterlogged material, placing Jason's hat beside you as you tried to make your tense self as comfortable as possible.
The couch was covered in deep gashes, the toymaker's nails having dug deep in retaliation. He had clearly put up a fight.
You find a way to turn on the device, listening to the soft and joyful jingle upon doing so.
Very unfitting.
The dog like creature grimices upon jumping up and sitting beside you, hating the texture of wet fabric under his paws. He growls slightly, unamused to be in a place so run down. Almost like it was unbecoming of him to even be in such a place to begin with.
The small screen in front of you flashes dimly, stock wallpaper greeting you and doing very little to quell the fear and dread in the pit of your stomach. You take a deep breath, noticing a message went unread in the inbox.
You knew deep down that message was meant for you to find, to read and to perhaps kill whatever spirit you had left. You almost didn't want to know what it contained, finger trembling over the select button while tears gathered in your shimmering eyes.
" I... I can't..."
Sensing your haste the creature beside you places a paw on your shoulder, trying his best to offer up words of wisdom, smirking all the while.
" Do you want to find him? You won't know if you don't look"
You take another deep breath, turning to the creature and smiling softly in silent thanks.
Opening the inbox you feel your heart beat heavy and quick, thumping dangerously against your ribs.
You open the highlighted message, seeing it display a sentence already setting your nerves on edge.
' For The Doll'
The message was short and to the point, quivering becoming harsher the more you read but no matter how many times you glanced over the words they refused to sink in. Tears well in your eyes as it finally began to become real and the words slowly began to make more sense to you.
' He isn't here and neither am I. Don't think I forgot what you both did to me. I was in pain for weeks when I lost my arm and I'm not wasting this chance at payback. Perhaps you will get him back later... If me or my boss are feeling generous.
Pray for his life. He needs them '
You throw the phone against the damp wall in anger, tears streaming down your face as you begin to sniffle, quickly on the verge of tears.
" Jason..."
Your voice was soft, almost silent as you muttered curses under your breath. You wanted to cry out, holding back the screams.
A slight twinge of fear appears in the eyes of the dog demon, he too muttering under his breath.
" This told me nothing! How can I.. How can I...?!"
Suddenly you smell the familiar scent of varnishes and paints, focusing on your surroundings and finding yourself back home, surrounded by the silent weeping of the toymaker's many dolls.
" How did I.. Get here? "
You watched as the dolls around you mourned the loss of their creator, black tears falling softly down their smoothed and perfect faces, still unable to move despite their sorrow.
Standing to your feet you glance around the room, seeing the demon dog sitting behind you, smile as wide as ever. His voice was gruff and demanding, a noticiable growl to the tone.
" Clean yourself up. I have calls to make"
You walk closer to him, curiosity and confusion well upon your features.
" What...?"
The corners of his mouth frown slightly, seemingly upset you would dare question him. Perhaps nobody ever had before.
" You want to find him don't you?"
You nod gently, saying no more to dare defy his wishes. You didn't know his name let alone what he was capable of and if his powers in the woods were anything to go by then this creature wasn't to be annoyed.
" Being in debt to the toymaker is very valuable you know.."
That's it. There was something it in for him, a favour you didn't wish to persue.
You turn away from the harsh eyes of the dog, sighing as you fear you had no other choice or say in this matter. The sound of claws on wood echo through the workshop, causing you to look back to see the creature exit into the other room. He howls back, knowing you were watching him.
" Call me Smile. Its a name you better remember"
