Chapter Three

We all went to go sell our papes
"So why'd ya only take 20 papes Dave?" I asked him
"Bad headline!" He replied with serious look on his face
Me and Jack both look at each other with a grin
"Ya see dats the first thing ya gotta learn, headlines don't sell papes!" He said before I interrupted him
"Newsies sell papes!" I finished for him
We went to a busy place by the wrestling where lots of crowds were
Me and Jack were shouting random headlines that weren't true,
"Where's that headline!" David asked me
"Page 9!" I replied
I saw David out of the corner of my eyes flip to the page he scanned it for the headline I said it was called
"Yous are lying!" He shouted at me and Jack
"We're not lying we're just improving the truth!" Jack replied
"No your being sly!" David shot at us
"No we're doing what we gotta do to get by, alright!" I said
"But everything your saying back there it was all lies! And now your getting Les to lie aswell!" He responded
"We'll it ain't nothing the guys who write it don't do!" Jack replied
"Our father taught us not to lie!" David said
"Yeah we'll ours taught us not to starve!" I replied to him annoyed
"Yeah I guess we all got and education en!" Jack said getting up finish selling his papes
Suddenly Les came running over
"Give me some more of those papers!" Les said eager to get more money
"Wait hold on, you smell like beer!" David said smelling his breath
"Yeah that's how I made more money a guy bet me I wouldn't drink some!" Les said
"Hey kid no drinking the job it's bad for business!" Jack said laughing
"Yeah I mean what if someone had called the cop on you!" I said patting Les's back
Les gave me a small smile that I returned
"Hey is that guys a friend of yours? David asked pointing across the wrestling ring
"Beat it!" Jack shouted
I quickly grabbed Les and followed Jack through the wrestling ring making a quick escape from Snyder
"Come on!" Jack shouted as we scurried through a tight and small alley way and through a busy street,
"Quick go infront of me Les!" I shouted at him
We all quickly ran through an orphan building eagerly running up each set of stairs
"Watch sleeper there!" I shouted to Les
As we jumped over someone sleeping on the stairs
I kept guiding Les through the building until we got to the roof
Me and Jack both ran and jumped of the edge, and hid behind the wall while I waved for Les and David to come over.
We all sat and hid behind the wall while Snyder shouted for Me and Jack furiously
"I'll get you Sullivan and Wilson!" He shouted as we quietly crawled away
We kept running through streets until we got outside Medda's place
"I'm not running any further!" David shouted at us angrily
"It's just in here!" I said concerned at the annoyed look on his face
David and Les followed us in to a fancy and admiring building as me and Jack directing them back stage
"I have questions!" David stated loudly at us
"Shh!" I replied
"Who was that guy? Why was he chasing yous?" David asked
"That guys chasing us back er, that was Snyder he's the keeper of the refuge!" Jack replied catching his breath
"Yous were in jail?" Les asked with his eyes lighting up
"Yeah!" Jack replied with a smirk
David worriedly and viciously grabbed Les
"Why were yous in there?" David asked with a worried look in his face
"We'll I was starving so I stole some food!" Jack used as an alibi
"What about you?" David asked
"We got names yano!" I replied
"I was doing the same!" I said
"What so yous are both thief's?" David accused us
"No we were helping other kids alright!" Jack shot back at him
"Why did he call you Sullivan and Wilson?" He asked
"I'm Ava Smith you hink I'm lying?" I asked him
"What's going on here!" Someone shouted
We all turned round to see Medda waking down the stairs
Me and Jack went and met her halfway as Hack kissed her hand
"Wouldn't kick us out without a kiss goodbye, would ya Medda?" He teased
"Oh Kelly!" She said relived
She gave him a hug and then her eyes had fallen on me
"How ya been kid?" She asked me while pulling me in for a hug
I gave her a smile before pulling away
"So Medda!" Jack announced
"Yes?" She replied
"This is David and Les!" He introduced them
"Hi!" She said quietly
"Oh aren't you the cutest thing there ever was!" She said brushing Les with her feather.
