Chapter Nine

We went to the refuge and climbed over the fence making our way onto the roof
"I'll hold the rope, you'll be tied to it" Jack said
"Hey! Who made you boss!" I replied whining
"We'll I'm a man! I'm naturally boss!" He argued
"No you ain't!" I shot at him
"I ain't what? the boss?" He asked
"Yeah you're not the boss and you're not a man either!" I shouted at him
"You're still a boy!" I argued at him
"Fine! You should not be holding the rope because males are stronger!" He stated
"Happy?" He said sarcastically with a grin
"I'm just as strong as you! And any other newsies there is!" I stated back at him looking angry now
"Ok we'll you're lighter so you won't be as heavy as I would, alright!" She shouted back rolling his eyes
"Now can we break our friend out of jail? Or are you still having a tantrum?" He said
"Put a lid on it!" I sighed before I tied the rope around me
"Need some help?" Jack offered
I tried tying the rope round myself but couldn't tie it at the side of me, I sat hopelessly trying sticking out my tongue by how concentrated I was,
I gave him a firm stare
"Fine!"
I sighed floppy my arms to my side
He tied the rope round me whilst dusting a bit of dirt of my shirt
"There you're all set!" He said grinning at me
I rolled my eyes at him before turning my back and getting ready to jump off the roof
"Still mad?" Jack teased
"Are ya ready or not?" I replied annoyed
"Ready!"
He replied.
I could hear him laughing about how stubborn I was being
"Lower!" I shouted up to him
"Aight!" He replied
"Aight Jackster that's enough!" I shouted to him
I quietly moved more towards the window
"Hey ya twiglet, you got a new fella in here! Get him for me will ya!" I said
"The gimp?" He asked
"Yeah. Yeah the gimp!" I said rolling my eyes annoyed
"Heya Av's!" Crutchie said softly smiling at me
"Heya Crutchie!" I replied with a soft smile
"What you hanging around here for?" He said concerned
"What am I hanging around here for?" I repeated laughing
"Guess who's on the roof!" I said
"Who?" He asked
"Jack!" I replied
"Oh is that Jack?" He asked
"Hiya Jack!" He chuckled
"Heya Crutchie! we're gonna bust you outta here!" Jack said
"Oh well here's the thing Av's!" Crutchie said his smile slowly turning into a frown
"The Delancys they sorta worked me over a little. Yano!" He said anxiously
"Yeah. They hurt ya" I replied sadly nodding my head
"Yeah" he replied for the first time ever looking sad
"We'll that's alright me Jack will carry ya outta here if we have to!" I stated
"I don't want nobody carrying me!" Crutchie said
Suddenly Snyder comes through the door everyone hurried away into straight lines as Snyder walks slowly past them all scanning them thoroughly. I quickly bolted shaking the rope for Jack to pull me up, I ended back up on the roof and explained to Jack what Crutchie had said and we decide to go back to the lodging house
"We gotta win this strike Jack! We gotta win for Crutchie!" I stated at him as the silence got louder
"I know..." was all he replied as we went back to silence
"We will win as long as we have David!" Jack said
"Yeah well I'm not counting on David I'm counting on us!" I said
"Come on Av's David's our only hope!" Jack said persuading me
"David ain't even a newsie!" I stated
"Sure he is!" Jack said
"No he got papes for a day he ain't a newsie! He ain't one of us" I shouted at Jack
"He is one of us no matter how long he's been selling papes for!" Jack argued
"No he ain't! He's just another rich snob who's gonna bail on us the second things get tough!" I demanded at Jack
"Yeah well we didn't think of you like that! Did we?" Jack stated
"We took care of you! We looked after you the second you walked into the lodging house!" Jack added on
"Now how come we can't do that to David?" Jack asked me
"Because David has a family! If he gets caught up with street rats like us that's gonna effect him!" I stated back
"What if he ends up in the refuge?" I shouted
"We ain't got no family Jack! We don't matter! Nobody's counting on us to come back home at night!" I stated
"David ain't one of us! We would do anything for the newsies cause their our only family we have! David wouldn't go to refuge for us would he?" I yelled at Jack
"Ava-" Jack tried to say but I cut him off again
"Would he Jack?" I asked him again.
The silence after that answered the question for me. He wouldn't. And Jack knew that.
