We carried on walking down the street the wind softly blowing, horse's hoofs clashing of the ground, voices in the distance. Me and Jack both stared at the ground, it was the first ever fight we've had in a while, I didn't know what to say so I said the only reasonable thing I could think of
"Look Jack, David can be a newsie or even part of our gang, but I'm not gonna trust him until I know I can" I said softly still looking at the ground
"Alright, I get that" he replied looking at me as I still stared at the ground
"Me and the newsies ain't going anywhere anyway!" He said letting out a smile whilst nudging me playfully
I stared back at him returning a bright smile
"We good?" Jack asked
"Of course we are!" I replied
Jack wrapped his arms around me and we carried on walking to the alley where the others were staying
"Heya fellas!" Jack said happily
"Shh!" Racetrack whispered
"They're sleeping!" He said softly
Me and Jack sat down facing Racetrack
"Aight I'm going to bed!" Jack said yawning
"Aight!" Me and Racetrack both replied
We moved up the alley away from the others
"Got a big day ahead of us" Racetrack said lighting his cigar
"Yeah I know" I replied
I couldn't help but frown remembering what I had left in the lodging house
"You alright?" Racetrack asked me
"No" I replied staring at the ground again
"Well, what's the matter?" He asked me rummaging through his pockets
"My box, it's still in the lodging house" I said sighing
"Oh no!" He replied changing the tone of his voice to soft a sorrowful
"Come on we can get it back!" He said standing up
He loved out his hand for me to grabbed and helped me get on my feet
"Thanks Race!" I said giving him a small smile
"Couldn't sit there and see ya sad!" He replied wrapping his arm around me
We walked into the open doors of the lodging house
"Shh!" He said tip toeing your the stairs
"This it?" He asked me as he reached my old bed,
I quickly nodded and took it from his hands, suddenly we heard footsteps coming up the stairs
Me and Racetrack looked straight at each other fearfully
The person went into the hygiene room and we took that as an opportunity to bolted out of there. Racetrack latched onto me as we ran swiftly down the stairs, at the bottom the quickly grabbed my hand as we ran further away into the dark streets of New York that were lit up by the massive glowing moon above us.
"Now that's what I call thrill!" Racetrack said catching his breath whilst laughing
"Yeah tell me about it!" I replied laughing whilst patting his back
"Let's get back to the alley!" He said as we both set off into the night
"What's in there anyway?" Racetrack asked me
"Can't say!" I replied giving him a smirk
"You've never showed anyone what's in there! Why?" He asked me
"We'll because I'm waiting for the right day, the right time!" I replied holding the small wooden box tight
"You've only showed Jack...why not the rest of us?" He asked again
"Well you know what bond me and Jack have!" I said
"It doesn't mean I don't care for the rest of yous! It's just Jacks like a brother to me and you know that" I added on
"But this box is too special just to show anyone! I'm waiting for a special time with my special people to show them my special box" I said placing it on the ground
"I can't wait for that day to come!" Racetrack said
We both got into our own little 'beds'
"By special people you did mean the newsies and us, right?" Racetrack asked
"Yes" I said letting out a laugh as I playfully rolled my eyes
"Oh alright just checking" Racetrack said
"Night Race!" I said
"Night Av's!" He replied
I felt the cold wind blow on me the whole night long, but I didn't feel the cold, my heart was warm knowing I was still sleeping with my friends, with my family.
