Chapter Five

I sat listening about how the prices of the newspapers have been raised,
"Come on Jack let's just get our lousey papes while they still got some!" Mush said sighing
"No, nobody's going anywhere!" Jack shouted furiously
"Oh come on Jack there's nothing we can do!" Mush said
"This will bust me I'm barely making a living as it is right now!" Skittery sighed
"I'll be back sleeping on the streets!" Boots yelled
We were all furious at Mr Pulitzer
"Jack it's a rigged deck, they got all the marbles!" Racetrack screamed
"Just let me think!" Jack yelled at them all.
"We work for Mr Pulitzer he can't just gouge us like that!" Blink said holding his head in his hands
"Oh for crying out loud! Ya done thinking yet Jack!" Racetrack yelled rolling his eyes
"We need ta show Mr Pulitzer that he can't do things like that to us!" Was all Jack managed to put together
"If he's gonna treat us like we're nothing then we need to show him who has the real power!" He stated
"What like a strike?" David asked from in the crowd
"Yeah like a strike!" Jack agreed
That caught my attention I suddenly jumped down from my talk cart, all eyes had fallen on me
"Jack we can't strike!" I said
"We'll why not!" Jack asked
"Cause we ain't a union, we're just angry kids with no money!" David shouted
"We'll if we go on strike we are a union!" Jack shot at him
"Yeah but there ain't enough of us Jack!" I stated
"We'll we get all of the newsies all over New York involved!" Jack said
"Jack it ain't just that, think about it if we go on strike we won't make any money, we'll all be sleeping on the streets and who knows how long it's gonna take to win!" I said to him
"It won't work unless everyone wants to fight for our rights!" I said looking around at all the newsies crowded round us
"Yeah!" They all screamed
"This is serious fellas!"I stated
"However long we can go, Pulitzer can go longer!" I yelled
"Yeah I mean listen Ava's right!" Jack shouted
"Pulitzer and Hearst and all them other rich fellas, we'll I mean they own this city!" Jack yelled grabbing the newsies attention
"So do you really think a bunch of street rats like us can make a difference?" Jack stated
"Then the choice has got ta be yours!" Jack roared at them
"Are we just gonna take what they give us or are we gonna strike!" I yelled into the crowd facing us
Everyone looked around at each other, everyone looked nervous they were all waiting for someone to agree before they all would
"STRIKE!" Les shouted from deep in the crowd
"STRIKE!" The rest of the newsies chanted 
"Who's ready to strike?" Jack shouted into the crowd
"THE NEWSIES!" The crowd replied
"Are we gonna break the strike?" I shouted
"NO!" All the newsies replied
Everyone was excited and cheering
"What's gonna take to stop the scabbers! Can we do it?" I asked
"YEAH!" The crowd of newsies cheered
"Can we stop the wagons?" Jack asked
"YEAH!" Newsies replied
"Pulitzer and Hearst they think we're nothing are we nothing?" Jack asked
"NO!" The newsies replied
"We're a union just by saying so!" I shouted into the crowd
"And the world will know!" Jack finished
Everyone was cheering and clapping, me and Jack jumped down while crowds surrounded us patting our backs and cheering for us
"When the circulation bell starts ringing will we hear it?" I asked
"NO!" They all replied
We walked to the closed gates of the circulation building with crowds following us
"What if the Delancys come out swinging, will we hear it?" Jack shouted
"NO!" They all yelled back
All newsies were in one big crowd outside the building, I went to stand between Racetrack and Mush who were at the front of the crowd along with David and Les. Jack climbed up to the board full of information about the newspapers and wrote 'strike' across the whole board.
We all cheered as he wrote it.
"Come on over ere fellas!" Jack shouted
Me and Jacky boy sat outside of Mr Pulitzers building with the newsies crowding round us
"We gotta get the word out to all the newsies of New York!" I shouted to David who was facing me and Jack
"Yeah we need some of those what do ya call it?" Jack added struggling to find the word
"Whatever you want cowboy!"
"What do ya want?"
We're what the crowd of newsies echoed with
"Ambassadors?" David guessed
"Yeah!" Jack shouted
Jack stood right in the middle of the entrance with David standing behind me, I leaned against the wall beside Jack as he told the newsies his demands
"Right you guys gotta be ambastards!" He shouted
With that everyone howled with laughter including me as I patted his shoulder to signal to him to keep talking,
"And go tell the others that were on strike!" He demanded at them all
"Say Jack I'll take Harlem!" Blink shouted fleeing the scene
"Yeah, I got midtown!" Racetrack said still laughing
"I got the Bowery Jack!" Mush volunteered
"Hey! I'll take Bronx!" Crutchie said while bringing a small child with him.
Soon enough Jack was picking people to go to all different places in New York until finally he wanted volunteers for Brooklyn
"So, what about Brooklyn? Who wants Brooklyn?" Jack yelled around looking for any volunteers
Nobody raised there hand in fact they all avoided eye contact
"Come on Spot Conlon's a territory!" I said getting up from my wall confused on why nobody wanted Brooklyn
  "What's the mattah you scared of Brooklyn?" Jack asked confused
"Hey, we ain't scared of Brooklyn!" Boots replied
"Spot Conlon makes us a little nervous!" He added
"Yeah well nobody makes me nervous!" I stated back at Boots
"Aight so me and you Ava we'll take Brooklyn!" Jack said patting my back
"And we'll bring Davey here for company!" He said teasing David whilst hugging him, I patted David's hair playfully
The rest of the newsies laughed along
"Sure just asking as yous two take our demands to Pulitzer!" David said smirking
"Us? To Pulitzer?" I said scoffing
"We'll yous are the leaders!" David said coming closer to me smirking
"Go tell em Ava!" I heard some voices say
"Go tell em guys. we're behind ya!" Others
said
"Oh well maybe a kid will soften him up!" Jack said frantically grabbing Les to bring in with us as the newsies chanted 'strike'.
