Chapter Six

We were inside of Pulitzers building I could hear the newsies chanting outside
"Ava what are we doing?" Les asked me
"It's alright we're just gonna talk ta Pulitzer!" I said patting his head as he gave me a smile
"Just say beside me alright Les" I said holding his hand
"Alright!" He replied.
We went up to an office demanding to see Mr Pulitzer and Jack wasn't gonna take no as an answer, before we knew it we got threw out, Jack was still screaming at the guy
"You tell Mr Pulitzer that he needs a word with me!" Jack yelled at the guy
"Yeah!" Les agreed throwing his fist in the air
We saw David standing with a middle aged man
"Hi, I'm Brian Denton! I work for the New York Sun!" He said holding his hand out to shake ours, Jack shook his hand but I hesitated
"Yeah so?" I asked
"We'll your firmed David here told me about your strike!" He said
I looked at David confused
"Why don't we settle this at Tibby's!" Denton said
"Ali right as long as it's on you!" Jack replied smirking
We all walked to Tibby's to get some food but as we were sitting down me and Jack were telling him all about what happened inside that building
"Does it scares yous?" He asked us
We looked at him confused
"You're going up against the most powerful man of New York!" He added on
"Oh yeah look at us we're trembling!" I scoffed back at him laughing with Jack
"Well keep me in touch I want to here all about this strike!" Denton said giving us a number on a card
"Hey so we gonna make the papes?" Jack asked
"If yous make it worth the papes!" Denton replied
"Why have any objections?" He asked us
"No expect for no pictures!" Jack said
"You got it!" Denton replied grinning while lifting his hat
"Oh and Denton make sure you get my name right! Kelly, Jack Kelly and Ava Smith" Jack said to him as he was heading out the door
"Got it!" He said with a smile before leaving.
We headed to Brooklyn after that
"So we're gonna make the papes!" Jack said grinning at me
"I don't know, Jack" I replied keeping my eyes focused on ahead
"What don't you trust him?" Jack asked me
"You gotta earn trust Jack, I mean we've just met him!" I replied lifting a stone and throwing it into the water down below us
"Look Ava I know you find it hard trusting people, and I don't blame ya!" Jack said giving me a small quick hug
"So who's this Spot Conlon then?" I asked Jack
"I can't believe you haven't met him!" Jack replied
"Every time he came over I was selling my papes! And besides I don't like leaving Manhattan!" I argued
"Yeha well I know that!" Jack said
"So is this Spot Conlon really dangerous!" David asked scared
Jack bursted out laughing at him. Before we knew it we were waking along a pier hovering over a lake where all of the Brooklyn newsies were jumping in
"Hey Cowboy who's the angel?" One of sneered
"Watch it!" Jack said squaring up to him
"Or what?" They yelled back
Suddenly Jack pushed him into the water
"We'll if it ain't Jack be nimble, Jack be quick!" Spot yelled
"So you moved up in the world Spot got a river view and everything!" Jack replied with a grin
Me and David stayed close beside each other as we were unfamiliar to where we were
"I see you have company!" Spot said jumping down from his tower and looking me in the eyes
"Ain't she a pretty one!" He said giving Jack a smirk while kissing my hand
"Alright Spot keep your distance!" Jack said gently pushing Spot away from me
"So you're Ava then" Spot said smiling at me
"Yeah, how'd you know?" I asked
"Newsies business and talk travels! When you became a newsies people started talking, there is only one girl newsie after all!" Spot said
"Speaking of talk I've been hearing things from little birds!" Spot said his face turning from smiling to serious in seconds. He took out his sling shot and began to shoot some old glass bottles
"Jacky boys newsies plan like there going on strike!" He said
Suddenly I realised why no one wanted to go to Brooklyn Spot Conlon was intimidating
"We ain't playing! We are going on strike!" David shouted
"Oh yeah? Yeah?" Spot said whilst getting closer to David
"What is this Jacky boy some kind of waking mouth?" He roared giving David a glare as if there was hell behind his eyes
"Yeah and a mouth with a Brian and if you got half of one you'll listen to what he had ya say!" I said approaching the two of them
Spot face suddenly changed he got a lot more calmer and began to sit down to listen to David
I took a seat on a barrel whilst David began
"Well we're going on strike but there ain't enough of us so we're getting all the newsies over New York involed!" David began to say
"Yeah he heard!" I said whilst rolling my eyes
"what they tell you?" Spot asked annoyed
"Well-" David began to say I knew he would mess it up
"That Spot Conlon was the most famous newsie in New York... and probably ever where else too and if he joins the rest of the newsie will join! And we'll be unstoppable!" I said
"Yeah well maybe you're the ones with the brains after all!" Spot said standing up and getting close to me smiling
"But what are you gonna do if a guy comes running at ya with a club? How do I know you got what it takes?" Spot said to us
"Cause we're telling ya Spot!" Jack said
"That ain't good enough Jacky boy ya gotta show me!" Spot replied with a serious face
Jack pulled me away and we left Brooklyn to get back to Manhattan
"Ava! Maybe I'll see ya soon!" I heard Spot yell as we faded into the distance.
