The night, Jade made a stop at her aunt's and cousin's house before she went to her own home. Currently, June, Jade and Tasha were sitting on the latter's verandah, having a drink and engaging in a random conversation.
"Me did afi beat ar, man!" June said after a sip on her rum cream.
Tasha laughed. "Next time yufi call me. Memba me a strong body gyal, me can do mi thing."
Jade shook her head, laughing as well. "Memba she nearly kill waa gyal."
Inwardly, June cringed. That was not her proudest moment. . . When she was in prison, she had to learn how to quickly adapt - being a quiet loner got her bullied, beaten. Even by her own cellmate. Nonetheless, June took her beatings without a fuss. She knew better than to take part in fights - she wanted to get out early on good behavior.
It was when an inmate overheard her precious son calling another woman 'Mommy' and teased her about it, June finally snapped. She earned her stripes in prison right there and then. Two months in solitary confinement was definitely worth the respect it brought June.
"Unu stop joke bout dat," she scolded them. "Nearly killing smaddy ano nun fi brag bout." Though she would admit that she did what she had to do. "Anyways. Change e topic." June went on to tell them about the proposal from Kellon, expressed her indecisiveness on accepting his pity. She wanted a job - no questions about it - she just needed the extra push before she told him 'yes'.
"Accept it, yes!" her cousin stated. "If yu nuh like it, just quit. Yu can even search fi a next nail salon while yu work fi him-"
Whatever words Jade was saying got cut off by a loud commotion. The three ladies sprang to their feet, ran into Tasha's house and peeped through the back window.
Mi bloodclaat! June nor her friends couldn't see what was happening next door, though they were hearing the sound of hard slaps and loud cries very clearly.
"Lawd Gee!" Tasha was aghast. "Wicked man Chris still a beat the woman?!"
June slowly nodded her head. "Him neva stop."
"Jewiz!" Jade joined the conversation. "A some solid lick dat ino! We fi call police?"
Tasha shook her head. "Nope. Me live here fi the longest and a so Chris eva handle Sophia. All when we call police or if nobody go ova deh go tek ar weh, she lie fi him and a she dat right back under him arms the next day."
June sighed. "Sophia can gwan and gwan until that bwoy kill ar one day."
"Who cya hear must feel." Tasha agreed. "Is a pity mi house camera dem nuh come wid audio and cya see ova deh good."
June laughed. "Right! Cause your camera dem capture everything."
"Nuh true?"
Jade frowned as the three stepped away from the window and moved back to the verandah. "No sex nor money cya good so fi me turn punching bag, ah sarry." She shuddered when she heard another loud cry.
"Like Tarone wuda eva put him hands pon yu." Tasha commented.
"She only get beat up ina bed." June wiggled her eyebrows at her cousin.
