Could the day possibly get any worse for June? Her meeting for drug addicts ran over longer than she anticipated. Her chartered taxi broke down from engine problems. Now, she had to be walking in the hot, humid town of Ocho Rios for the rest of her journey to work. At least she wore comfortable shoes so the walk wasn't as unbearable. Still, she was not looking forward to her late arrival at work: her boss would have a fit and her clients were probably antsy by now.
Sighing, June pulled out her phone and called her client she would have been tending to if the Universe wasn't insistent on working against her. "Hello? It's June. I'm so sorry ino, Miss, mi ago later than mi did tell yu. Yu can wait bout ten minutes more or get a new tech."
June sighed when her client told her that she would happily get a new nail tech. Muttering, "Look pon e likkle money gone dung e drain. . .", June sent her client the deposit she had paid upon making the appointment. She just hoped the woman wouldn't hold her tardiness over her head. It would be a shame to lose a regular due to unforeseen circumstances.
About ten minutes later, June pushed open the door to the small nail salon and was immediately greeted by her boss, Shaniel. "Next time you're late, you're fired."
June didn't think twice before she began to profusely apologize. She couldn't afford to lose this job. Not only did it pay her bills, it was her main stream of income into 'Plan Burn Brothel'.
"Nuh mek it happen again, June," her boss was saying now, "Anyway, yu client gone to smaddy else."
"I know." June said over her shoulder before taking a seat behind her work desk. Her work station was possibly the best one in the entirety of the salon. It was positioned at the wall closest to the door. From here, she could see everyone walking past or into the store. She could even hide herself behind the nearby column in the case of an emergency, while everyone else would be left open and defenseless. June adjusted the height of her chair and relaxed more into the soft cushion. While she waited for the rest of her clients to show up, she decided she would text Jade, her favorite cousin who she shared the closest bond with. 'Odane made me late for work.'
Her cousin's response was almost instant. 'smh idk why him stay so like him nuh already mek yu life hard enough.'
June sighed as she typed up her next response. 'Exactly. E one Shaniel seh if me late again me fi pack mi bags.'
'Jewiz. Mi hope e nafi reach deso.'
June sighed in response to her cousin's text. Jade was absolutely right: Odane was a nuisance in her life. Unfortunately, he was not one that could be easily eradicated. Ex-boyfriends that were set on making a person's life absolute hell were more frustrating than an unreachable itch.
June looked up from her new response she was typing to her cousin when she heard a loud noise coming from outside. Music was loudly blasting from a black, heavily-tinted Trackhawk that had parked nearby the salon. A slim, brown-skinned woman hopped out the passenger side of the vehicle. The front window went down and the lady turned to speak to whosoever was behind the wheel. After a brief chat, she strolled into the salon and was greeted by the owner of the establishment.
"Hello, welcome in. Do you have an appointment?"
While they conversed, June looked back down to her phone. She sent off the text to her cousin just as Shaniel notified her that the client wanted her nails done by her. June nodded and quickly switched her demeanor to something more professional. "Hello. I'm June. What can I do for you today?"
