::: November | Monday :::

June was at work radiating happiness when Serena burst her bubble.

"Are you a whore or a worker?" the woman condescendingly asked the words as if it was the past Monday.

"Excuse me?" June asked through clenched teeth. Her anger was rising and the knife that idly sat on the counter was tempting to grab.

"I know we don't judge based on backgrounds but is it right that as a young woman you would sleep with the boss for a raise?"

June hushed. Was this what they think she was doing? She could have laughed to herself like a maniac. Instead, she took two deep breaths to calm herself like the counselor in prison had trained her to do, then she asked her question again as if she didn't hear Serena the first time. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me, Miss Michaels," the woman said with a disgusted sneer. "Me have the right mind fire yu-"

That made June laugh. "Ano you hire me so yu cya fire me."

Serena gasped. "How dare you speak to your superior-"

June hissed her teeth. "Miss Serena, if yu know wa me know, e best yu stop talk before yu further upset me. Must vex yu vex a neh your legs ova the man shoulders."

Serena's mouth gaped like a fish flapping around on dry land.

June shook her head as she watched the stunned woman before she walked away. Duppy know who fi frighten. Turning a corner, June became both shocked and embarrassed to see Candace.

The woman stopped her pretense of dusting a cabinet. "Oh, hi, June, didn't see you there."

Hear this ya fass one ya now. . . "You heard, didn't you?"

That sly smile slipped onto her face. "So it was you. . ."

June went quiet. She was unsure how to smoothly lie herself out of this situation. She remembered screaming as loud as a banshee while Kellon 'sort her out nice and proper'.

"And fi think seh Naomi nuh realize yaa fuck ar man. . ." Candace's smile brightened when June remained quiet. "Round ya festive bad bad. Miss Serena right doh," she chuckled. "Are you a worker or a whore?"

Ashanti - who June didn't realize was sitting on the floor next to the small cabinet - spoke up. "Candy, yu mouth."

June was surprised to hear Ashanti speak. The woman was always so aloof and moody, she never expected her to come to her defense. Especially when it came to 'Candy' - these two appeared to be too closely joined at the hip.

Frowning at Ashanti's words, Candace stomped away.

"Thanks," June muttered. "But me neh need yu help."

Ashanti stood to her feet. "I wasn't helping you."

June raised a brow. "Yav a problem with me, Ashanti?" Because me nuh know wa me do people fi dem eva hot fi me so. Seeing the other woman raise a confused brow, June rephrased. "Every time yu see me yu skin up yu face like yu smell-"
