::: March | Monday :::

Sitting in the back of Leo's Honda CR-V, June looked down at her ringing phone. It was her Mom. The ladies were still not on talking terms, despite how much May was trying to get her daughter to speak to her. June sighed, her mind whisking her away to what brought them here. . .

[flashback. . .]

"I have someone on the phone who wants to speak to you." May had looked away when June raised a brow. May never thought this day would come. Meeting her daughter's tired eyes, she had said, "It's your uncle. . . Antwain."

"Uncle?" June had raised a brow, confused. "Me think a only you and Aunty Mazie-"

"Yes," May had cut her off. "Antwain is your father's brother."

"My father?" June had felt like she was going into a state of shock. Uncle? Father?

"Yes," May had offered the phone to her. "Do you want to speak to him?"

June had stared at the phone, dumbfounded. Shaking her head, she'd taken a step back. . . and another. . . and another. . . until she was in her room, staring at the door in a state of shock and confusion. She felt like a child who was just told that the Tooth Fairy and Santa Klaus weren't real.

Wa she mean by Uncle? Nights and nights now mi hear her a talk to this man and whenever me ask boh him. . . she lie? Did she know my father too?

June must have sat in one place for hours. In reality, it was not more than a few minutes.

May had entered the room, stared at her daughter with utmost regret.

"Yu know me father all this time, Mommy?" June had asked, not looking at her mother.

"Well, of course-"

"No," June shook her head and rephrased. "Mi mean if all these years yu did still in contact with him?"

May had sighed, took a seat next to her daughter and rested a hand atop her shoulder. "No," May had answered. "Just your uncle."

"Uncle. . ." the word tasted foreign in her mouth.

"Yes," May had nodded her head. "Antwain is your father's younger twin brother."

"Why yu neva tell me?" June had looked at her mother, tears of hurt, anger and betrayal glazing her eyes. "Why yu mek me grow without my other side of the family and just now a tell me bout them? Wa me fi do with this now, Mommy?"

May had sighed and moved her hand to her lap. "Juney, it's not as simple as you're making it seem. Chalky Hill isn't the best of places but I came here for a better life for me and you, especially you."

"That nuh answer mi question. . ." June had angrily wiped at her eyes. She felt betrayed by her mother. She could careless about a father or her Uncle Antwain, she never had a relationship with them and she turned out just fine. It would make no difference if they continued their life without her, for she planned on carrying on her life without them.
