two weeks later. . .
::: January | Saturday :::Standing at a table sipping on a concoction, June watched as Tarone spoke to the man he was with at the last club opening. The two men were surrounded by 'a bagga gyal'. Me really nuh know how Jade dweet. . . Ketch all tha big batty one deh a latch on pon him like ticks. June stood conflicted about whether or not she should confront them. After all, Jade and Tarone have been together for years. . . surely they must have found someway to work with the cons of Tarone being a popular social media influencer? Cudn be rass me.
"I keep seeing you everywhere."
Without turning, she knew who that voice was. She'd gotten used to Adrian's deep voice and ability to sneak up on people.
Taking another sip from her cup, she asked, "Yu own dis one too?"
"No. . . Yu see him over there?" he pointed towards the man Tarone was speaking to. "It's his club."
"I see. . ."
"Mm," Adrian pressingly eyed June. "Yu still vex wid e man?"
June sighed. Her time at the center had made her realize that Adrian and Kellon were practically inseparable, in a brotherly-way. Times like these, it annoyed her. Though she enjoyed Adrian's company, she hated his role of Kellon's wingman. Good thing me neh fuck him.
"Nuh come ruin me night," she snapped.
"Mm. . ." he answered, tapping away at his phone.
June looked back to Tarone, hating how he wasn't pushing the girl off of him. Mi afi go talk to Jade boh dis-
June felt Kellon's presence before she saw him. He always radiated a powerful aura that demanded her attention. Even when she was mad at him.
Looking beside Adrian, she saw him walk up to the table, his phone in a hand. He held her gaze in that pressing way he'd been looking at her the past weeks. She quickly looked away, not wanting to get trapped.
Adrian's heavy hand laid on her shoulder. She turned to glare at him, noticing that he had a similar hold on Kellon. "Me a go ova deso. Unu a stay yaso and mek up," grinning, he disappeared into the crowd before either of them could get a word in.
June was left in an awkward situation. The liquor started to feel dry as it slid down her throat. She got hot from annoyance and the music was suddenly too loud. He hadn't yet said a word and she was in disarray.
"June. . ."
"Mr. Cross," she formally answered.
"Mr. Cross? Bill offa dat," he sighed when June remained quiet. "Nuh rate how yaa move."
"And how's that?" she feigned cluelessness.
Sighing, he briefly looked away from her to say, "Come on the roof. In here too loud."
"I have nothing to say to you," she insisted, though deep down, she really was curious what he wanted to say. After all, she never gave him a chance to speak after Naomi's pregnancy announcement. She was simply too hurt to listen to whatever he had to say.
