"Is this place for real?"
People had this reaction every time they visited Aroma. Beomgyu looked around, watching the secret passage carefully. His reaction made me remember of my first time going through this route. My cousin, Sunhee had a lot of celebrity friends who used to visit her before her acting debute, and since the storage room had a staircase to the ground floor that no one else had an idea about, that made it easier to spend time together without a fear of being caught.
Sunhee told me that this room was supposed to be a dance academy as she always wanted to open one, but yeah... I was glad that it was our hideout now. Being in the industry could be a headache, and sometimes all you wanted was to have some peace. Away from all the cameras and screams.
"Your cousin must've a lot of friends for her to consider this option."
I hummed and pulled out a chair for him. He hesitated. "Sunbae, it's my treat. Please sit." I smiled to ease the awkwardness. He sighed and sat down. "About my cousin, she was pretty popular in her circle before debute. Uncle liked her friends a lot and built a back door to the storage room, which leads to here as you can see."
Beomgyu cooed. "This is cool."
I filled a glass of water and pushed it in his direction. "Wait till you eat my aunt's magic recipe. You'll become a fan." I noticed that he was still hesitant and said, "I wanted to thank you for your consideration during Gayo Daejeon and helping me with the escape. Consider it as a thankful dinner."
He looked up. "If anything I should be thankful for what you did tonight for me. I've no idea how you maintained your calm."
"Well." I shrugged. Life had not been kind to me, I wanted to say but didn't. "What would you like to eat?" I changed the topic and handed him over a menu card.
"Everything seems delicious," he mumbled as he scanned the menu. Then he looked up at me and cringed. "Sorry. I get excited whenever there's food on line."
I smiled. "I understand. Take your time. Type your order in the text," I said as I gestured to the phone laying on the table. "My aunt will bring our orders. We don't allow staff here to protect our privacy."
Beomgyu nodded animatedly and scanned the menu again. "Aren't you going to order?" He lifted his head and watched me on the brim of the card. "You haven't ordered for yourself yet."
"Aunt knows my order."
He nodded again and went back to the task in hand. In the meantime, I messaged Sunhee that I had the vip section, as she called it, booked. She replied with a series of wide eyes emojis, and asked me whom did I bring. I gave her a sleepy emoji and placed the phone back on the table.
"Ae-cha." Beomgyu called for my attention. "You're younger than me, right?"
I paused. Did I offend him or something? Was he hurt by my comment? What did I even say? My eyes went left and right, trying to remember where I had left off my conversation with him. He must've seen panic in my eyes because his own eyes widened as he sat up straight, alarmed.
"You didn't do anything wrong," Beomgyu assured and I closed my eyes, relaxing a bit. "I was asking this because you act so... mature for your age. I mean, I look at Taehyun and now I'm looking at you... it's just doesn't feel like you both are of same age."
"I'm younger than Taehyun. By four months." I gave him a small smile. "I don't know about being mature. I guess it comes with the responsibility of being a leader? Maybe."
He mused. "Still. You're so calm and composed most of the time that it almost seems unreal."
His words told me that he had noticed me in the award shows, where I acted so robotic that fans made a meme out of my zoned out face. After the viral clip of SBS Gayo Daejeon, I made it a life mission to not give any reaction to the performances during a few award shows that Midnight Blue5 attended. Not because I was afraid of hate, I was used to that, but it was more of a consciousness. I didn't want to bring a spotlight to myself again. I had enough of that already.
