Beomgyu had an easy going personality. Atleast I thought so.
He would text me randomly to show his support and in my darkest times, he emerged like a sunray and I couldn't be more grateful. His visits were limited, so were mine. But, the mere thought of him thinking about me and taking time to drop a message, it was enough.
More than enough if you would ask me. But there were moments when I would grow insecure about this friendship between us. He would stop contacting me for days, only to return like nothing happened ever. But, I would always sense that change.
Always. This time he hadn't messaged me for two weeks. Not even a reply to my previous message.
"You've been staring at your phone for a while." Sunhee tilted her head, and I pushed my phone back into my jeans pocket.
"It's nothing." I took a seat as she set the table. I was visiting her for Christmas dinner. Uncle and aunt had gone to the grandma's as it was her first Christmas without grandpa since he passed away last January. "Thank you for cooking a meal for us."
She shrugged. "I won't live up to mum's cooking, but I tried." She sat in front of me and filled my plate. "It must've been exhausting with all the award shows."
I nodded. "It is, but I like being on the stage."
"That you do." Sunhee smiled. "How's my son in law?"
"You're just 30."
"Okay. My brother-in-law he is. How is my dearest Choi Beomgyu?"
I shook my head. "Nothing is going on. We're just friends." I lowered my gaze to the plate and chewed my food. "This is delicious."
"Beomgyu is nice. One year and ten months more, then you'll free to date." She paused. "At least no one would blame you if you got caught that is. Damn, your industry is messed up."
"You're also a part-"
"Acting is far more better than the idol job." Sunhee sighed, and I looked up at her. "Sorry. It's just, I'm concerned about you. The slightest chance of a happiness you've in this career is miles away because dating is a scandal." She grabbed my hand on the table. "Just stay strong. Okay?"
I chuckled. "Beomgyu sunbae take me as a friend-"
"Yes. Of course. I believe that." She rolled her eyes, a teasing smile on her face.
I left her apartment around 11, and went back to the practice hall. Only if Sunhee knew what kind of mess I had stepped into. My life had started revolving a person and his messages, and his absence was affecting my mood severely. Growing up, I hated women in dramas who had nothing going on in their lives except for the male lead and his obnoxious presence.
Now same thing was happening to me. We were all fools in love/affection I guess.
Another week passed by. No message from Beomgyu. I saw him in an award show then after almost a month. He was polite and bowed to us, "Anyonghyesyo," his honey voice greeted and I bowed back before walking past him. I tried not to steal glances at him for the rest of the night, but I did see other female idols gawking him backstage.
"Jealousy suits on you," Teal murmured, and I looked away from Beomgyu. "You know you can approach him first. Right? It doesn't have to be him always."
"I know." I took a deep breath and started walking in his direction. He was talking to one of the female group idols, and the moment I started, his eyes met mine across the hallway, and a slow secret smile made its way to his lips.
I raised my chin and swiftly grabbed his fingers, caressing the tips, before I walked away. I heard a sharp intake of breath, and glanced over my shoulder. Beomgyu was staring. His lips were moving. He was replying to the girl, but his eyes... they were on me. I took another corner and heard footsteps approaching me.
Turning around, I almost smiled when saw him. He didn't share my need to look at him freely though. The moment he came in front of me, his arms were around me, and I stilled. Before I could bath in his warmth, Beomgyu pulled away, and cupped my cheek. "Hey."
"Hey," I was whispering, almost holding my breath.
"I'm warned about dispatch recently. I can't stay here long." Beomgyu ran his other hand down his face, frustrated. "I think it's one of the hair stylists. I... I texted you frequently last month and... your name didn't come up, but you know... We've got to be careful."
"I... I understand." Hesitating, I covered his hand with mine. "Are you okay?"
His smile was breathtaking, and my heart constricted. I didn't want anything to happen to his smile. "I'm doing well. A bit busy... Are we still up for the new year night?"
"Will you be able to come?" My face lit up, and I bit my lip. I sounded damn excited about it. "I mean... Your group members and you... everyone-"
"Yes." His thumb caressed my skin before he looked around and dropped his hand. "My phone is not on me nowadays, so I texted you from Soobin hyung's number. I guess you didn't get it-"
"I thought it was some seaesang." I fumbled with my hands. "Sorry."
"Don't be. I understand the risk." Beomgyu stepped back. "I'll see you on New Year then."
We were like three and half weeks away from New Year. I tried to hide my disappointment and nodded, smiling. Beomgyu took another step back and I noticed that he was holding my hand. Each small step he took away from me, I felt like he was taking my happiness, my sanity away from me, with himself.
"Take care, Ae-Cha." His fingers slipped my hand, and I pressed my lips in thin line. He turned around and left the area as I stood there in silence.
"I always miss you, Choi Beomgyu."
