Vol.1 Chapter-12

Confusing person

It's been a day since I passed out from an empty mana pool. Even now, my body still feels a bit groggy, but other than that I'll more or less be fine. Even my legs that I hurt were fine now.

Arriving in front of the classroom, I headed to my usual seat right in the back. But someone was sitting in the seat next to mine, a seat that was normally empty.

"Lady Catherine, what brings you here?"

Yes, the one sitting down was Lady Catherine. Her blonde hair swayed as she looked at me.

"I simply wanted to sit here. I figured a view into the courtyard wouldn't be bad every now and then." she said as she looked outside the window next to her seat.

"I see! So you were worried about me weren't you!" I said with a big smile.

"!? I- where did that come from!? Who would worry about a commoner like you!?" Lady Catherine said while crossing her arms.

How cute! Like seriously, so cute!!

"Settle down, settle down." Teacher Loupe said as he stood on the podium in front.

"Now! Yesterday was a very important day! I got to assess the combat knowledge of each individual here." Teacher Loupe clapped his hands together.

"I'm sure here everyone knows how they performed. Whether the results were good or bad, it only means that there will still be room for improvement."

Teacher Loupe said with a proud tone. Even back then, Teacher Loupe was very proud of us, his students.

"Now! Let's set all the physical stuff aside for a while! Please, open your textbooks to chapter..."

The classes proceeded like normal  except for the occasional glances I get from Lady Catherine, at some instances, our eyes even met.

And so, lunch time came.

"Commoner, come with me." Lady Catherine said as she finished packing up her textbooks.

Lady Catherine lead me to the gazebo where she usually ate during lunch.

"Lady Catherine, isn't this what you would call a school date!?" I said, finally my excitement got the better of me.

"What are you talking about!? We are only eating together!" Lady Catherine said aloud, while Carol just stood by the side and smiled.

For lunch, a chicken sandwich was prepared. When I was put back in time, I found my new favorite food to be chicken sandwiches for some reason. But hey, I'm not complaining, especially after all, I know the taste of monster meat.

"Commoner, I'd like to ask you something."

"My name is Aya Beaulieu, I'm fifteen, my favorite hobby is playing with Lady Catherine!"

"Somehow, I'm irritated by the way you phrased that! But that was not my question!"

Lady Catherine said aloud as she took a bite of her sandwich.

"Ehem! Why do you bother socializing with me? I know my personality is horrendous, so why?" Lady Catherine said in a condescending tone.

"Because I want to, I'm selfish afterall."

I said, I mean it's true. I went back to the past simply because of a selfish wish of mine. I couldn't do anything the first time around, so this is my last chance.

"What does that even mean? Are you actually trying to curry favor me?" Lady Catherine asked, this time with a glare. Even when she's glaring at me it's so cute!!

"Hm, in a sense I guess?" I said while biting down on a sandwich. It was delicious! It's not like the ones in the cafeteria.

"Haah... The more answers I get the more questions I come up with..." Lady Catherine said with a sigh while slumping her shoulders.

"Lady Catherine, that's unladylike you know?"

"As if you could lecture me about being a lady!"

As the lunch time ended, Lady Catherine made me leave first to go to the classroom. I guess she has something to talk to with Carol?

"So, what do you think Carol?"

I asked my maid that was cleaning the table we ate on. I asked the commoner to go back to the classroom first since I had business here.

"Lady Aya, is confusing honestly. I had been trying to grasp her intentions since before but I still draw blanks." she said while not stopping her hands.

"That is true..." even I can't grasp the commoners intentions.

"But, I don't think she's lying Lady Catherine. But in a way she's not giving us the full story."

"What makes you say that?"

"She's curry favoring? But all I've seen her do is tease and make fun of Lady Catherine. And she says she only socializes simply because she wants to?"

"That is true! She seems like she doesn't see me as a noble at all!"

"Wait... Is that?"

Carol went silent for a while until her head perked up, having realized something.

"It was something like that? Pftt!" Carol suddenly burst out laughing.

"W-what is so funny?" I asked, very much confused.

Having stopped her laughter she breathed in and out to regain her composure.

"Lady Catherine, all I can say is that we've just been suspecting her too much. If you want to befriend her, just do it already. As far as I can tell, both of you seem pretty close already." Carol said with a mischievous grin.

"W-who said anything about befriending that commoner!? I'm simply being careful of the people around me!"

As much as I want to deny it, Lately, I've been feeling strangely calm when the commoner was with me. It's only been a day since I've started to truly think of accepting the commoner as my friend, is it because I've seen her at her weakest? Or is it because she's seen me shed tears.

"All I can really say Lady Catherine is Lady Aya may be hiding something important from you, but it's something she'll tell you in due time." Carol said having figured out the commoners motives.

"Why not just tell me then!?"

"It's not my place to say. And if you heard it from me, will you be able to face Lady Aya without feeling guilty?"

"Guhhh..." it's true, I've never cared about the feelings of others before, but somehow, I don't want the commoner to think ill of me.

"Understood..." having accepted my defeat, I stood up and started walking to the classroom. When I arrived at the hallway, the commoner was there leaning up against a wall.

"Ah! Lady Catherine! Let's walk back together!" she said with a big smile on her face. Her short brown hair bounced as she ran up to me.

"Hmph, you may walk with me."

When I saw the commoner waiting for me, I was strangely... Happy.

Truly, what a confusing person you are.
