Night of hearts

As the minutes ticked away in anticipation of the ball, Carol worked diligently on my dress. The gown I wore had once belonged to my mother, a stunning red creation adorned with elegant frills. I couldn't help but reflect on the romantic notion that this was the very dress she had likely worn when my father courted her. Some might find it corny, but I truly believed that wholehearted courtship was a romantic gesture.

With a satisfied step back, Carol announced, "And we are finished, with time to spare."

I could not resist a touch of self-assurance as I inquired, "How does it look? I'm rather confident in my appearance, being my parents' child, after all."

Carol responded with delight, "It looks absolutely fantastic!"

After finishing all that she had to do with mine, she swiftly changes into a dress of her own, in under ten minutes mind you.

Now it was time for the ball.

I couldn't help but ask Laura one more time as she finished applying my makeup, "Are you sure this looks alright? It doesn't appear strange, does it?"

Exasperated, Laura replied, "I've told you multiple times, it's perfect! Lady Catherine will undoubtedly agree."

I understood her frustration, I probably asked a dozen times already. "I hope so..."

As I looked at my reflection, my short hair was elegantly pinned up into a bun that revealed the back of my neck. The blue dress featured an off-shoulder design that highlighted my shoulders. The dress itself was undeniably beautiful. My only reservation was my own ability to do it justice.

Glancing at the clock, Laura took charge, pulling me out of the room, and we headed straight for the venue, the principal's mansion.

I didn't attend the previous ball, so I might as well enjoy this one.

As we arrived in the venue, we met up with Carol. In contrast to the maid uniform she always wore, Carol was actually wearing a dress. A beautiful purple dress that coincidentally matched with what Laura was wearing.

"You look great." Laura says to Carol.

"Thank you very much, Miss Laura."

"Don't call me that, I'd rather you address me normally, like when we meet outside of the school."

"I see... Okay then, Laura." Carol says with a smile.

While they were dressing me up, I actually heard something interesting, apparently, they were actually shopping buddies.

Laura IS a noble, but apparently her commoner roots never left her, she'd sneak out to buy ingredients and cook for her father.

Carol and Laura would always coincidentally meet in shops they frequented, so just like that they got pretty close.

It's kind of an unexpected pairing, I honestly never knew that, even in my past life she never told me anything about that.

Laura offers her hand to Carol, in which Carol joyfully takes.

Wait are these two...?

"Now then, Lady Aya, please take care of Lady Catherine for me for this night." Carol says as she walks into the ballroom with Laura in hand.

"Haha, will do!"

While my mind was still curious, a voice called me out from behind.

"C-commoner!" Lady Catherine's sweet voice fills my ears.
