It was the day. The day of the seventy fifth Hunger Games, maybe the last day I would see her. Han got up early. I did, too. I held her until her mentor called her down and I turned on the TV. I had to see her. I got popcorn, which would be offensive to all the Tributes except Han. We both knew she was going to make it. Maybe. I hope.
Han.
I ran down the stairs and went to all the tributes.
"Aven Rivers." I heard the gossip among the crowds. I had returned, better than ever. Kind of.
I ran to the room for the female District 7 tribute. There was no one there for her. She was just standing there until I came in. She looked up.
I hugged her.
She held me until the metallic voice started to count.
"You have ten seconds to get into the tube." It began to count, slowly, but too fast for me.
She had to get into the tube, and it began to close. I held my hand against the tube, she put her hand against mine. She went up and I turned my attention to the TV. It was water. With rainforest and beach. Han knew what to do. When the could swim, she took off. I bit my fingers and watched. She was a pretty good swimmer for someone who grew up in a forest district. She was one of the fastest swimmers.
She went straight to Cornucopia, grabbed an axe, some allies and went into the forest. The camera turned away from her, to the first death. She looked like Ava. I covered my eyes, my brain flashing to memories of Ava. Her smile, our games, her death.
My breathing shook and I sat on the floor. I went back to the closet and watched her when the camera was on her. She was strong. She kept Blight, Nuts and Volts close. They ran to the top, trying to stay away from everyone.
Then danger struck. Blight was running, until he wasn't. He was running after everyone, when he tripped. He was blown 10 feet away. Nuts, Volts, and Han ran for him, but his heart had already stopped. He was dead. Another death. I couldn't do this. I went to go for a walk, but just before I turned off the TV, it began to rain blood.
I couldn't abandon her, so I stayed.
They ran to the beach, Han trying to carry both of them to the shore. Byt the time they finally made it, they were covered.
