"A lot can change in a year."

"Elliot Louise Cartwright!" My sweet, dear step-monster's voice screeches up the stairs. I ignore her, just like I've done every night for the past year. My door opens and my twin brother, Ethan, walks in. I give him a smile, and sit up, closing my laptop.

"You can't hide from her forever, El," He tells me.

I shrug, "I know, it's just -- she's so aggravating, you know? And dad doesn't do a damned thing about this at all!"

He shook his head, "He's too lost in her to even think about us. We've been over this Ellie. Dad's long gone, we just have to keep our heads up."

"It wouldn't be like this if it weren't for cancer. God, I miss mom, Eth," I frown. Ethan looks down at his hands which are folded in his lap. Suddenly a smile formed on his face as he looks up to me.

"Guess what tomorrow is?" He says, waggling his eyebrows.

I groan and hide my face with my hands, "Don't remind me."

"See you bright and early, Elliot," He used my full name. I threw a pillow at my door as he closed it and huffed. I've always hated school, and he knows it. He also knows I despise it when people call me my full name.

Sighing, I got up and washed off all of my makeup, got into my pajamas, and slipped into bed. At the last second, I set my alarm. At least there will be new freshmen to scare.
