"How were classes? Did you have a good time?" Darla's mom Stacey said over the phone that night.
"Do you like your classes?" Samuel, Darla's dad added.
"Yeah, it was fine, school is school, so ya know... I can only have so much of a 'good time.'" Darla wanted to say that she couldn't think the entire day because Peter had left and she didn't know when he would come back, if he would come back at all. Peter had told her stories of previous girls from the Darling lineage and how each of them sort of dropped off the face of the earth. Peter stopped seeing them, he watched them grow up and then he forgot about them all together. Was he letting her go? Was he moving on to a new Wendy? No she shook her head at the thought as she pulled open her apartment door.
"I have to get going, I love you but I have some homework already."
"We love you," they both said as Darla hung up.
She didn't have homework, but she couldn't focus on their conversation not when all she could think about was Peter and whether or not she would see Neverland again, whether she would see him again.
"Hey, no Patrick today?" Amber asked, Amber was sitting at the small coffee table eating left over pizza.
"Peter," Darla corrected, "and no, he went home."
"Where is home?" She prodded, spilling tomato sauce on her shirt, cursing and promptly moving to the sink to try and clean it off her white shirt.
"England, and that's why you shouldn't wear white." Darla moved to the drawer and pulled out a Tide stick for the stain.
"Fancy, he didn't have an accent though." She jammed the Tide stick into her shirt and waited for it to do its magic.
"He lived in the states for a while and lost his accent," Darla lied.
"Too bad," Amber said with a smile seeing the stain fade away, "accents are hot!" Darla didn't want to talk of Peter anymore so she made an excuse to go to bed. Darla wanted to talk to Peter, not about him...
Darla looked out her window at the town and saw the stars shining brightly. Peter told her how to get to Neverland once. Find the big dipper, go south towards Mexico and keep going, cross an ocean and... it didn't matter though if she knew how to get to Neverland, she didn't have any fairy dust, and she couldn't fly there without Peter, she was sure to get lost. Darla wanted Peter but didn't know if it was all in her head. Everything she felt, was that just her being a girl in love with someone unlike anyone she had ever seen, or was it real? It was real, she decided as she pulled out her book. Everything she felt was real, she just had to hope that Peter truly did feel the same.
Peter couldn't stay away. He had never been this way with anyone since Wendy, now Darla was his everything.
"I can't stop thinking about her, Tink." Peter exclaimed throwing his hands up in the air. "She's perfect and she's-" Tink drops down pretending to be dead "oh am I really boring you that much with talk of her!" She flew up and shook furiously a yes. "Oh well, if you think so then maybe I'll just leave again and you won't have to hear me talk of her," she flew up to Peter as fast as she could and took hold of Peter's shirt and pulled down with all her tiny might, pulling him back down on the bed. "Tink, ouch you almost took off my head!" Peter exclaimed as he rubbed his head from hitting the wall. She mumbled a complaint, "you know I love you Tink." She jingled her bows a little bit because she didn't want Peter to leave but, she didn't want him to be unhappy either. And since his return to Neverland without Darla he had been miserable.
"It's complicated Tink, I just have to move on for a while and see what happens when she's done with school." Tink jingled again in agreement, she liked Darla after all. While Peter starred at his hands not knowing what to do next, Tinkerbell thought about Wendy.
Wendy was Peter's first love and she ruined him by leaving but in the end he understood but that was also when he was younger. He was older now, both mentally and physically. Tink couldn't deny that his love for Darla was different, that time wouldn't make him forget her like he did with the Darlings. She sat on his head and smiled down at him, it had been over two months and Peter hadn't left Neverland. He wanted to, every waking moment he wanted to show Darla something, tell her something, and when he remembered she wasn't there he took off slightly rising from the ground only to drop back down. Time would pass and he would forget, but he didn't.
"What do you mean leave?" Peter asked Tinkerbell three days after their conversation. She hovered in front of him and waited for him to listen. "You want me to go?" he questioned curiously and she nodded. "But why?" Tinkerbell started to talk and talk she did. "What do you mean I'm being mopey? I am not negative... I am still fun!" Peter was outraged, what was Tink doing? Why was she making him feel so horrible? "TINKERBELL!" he screamed and silenced her, some of the lost kids appeared along with Tiger Lily, they all starred at Tink and Peter.
"Tink," Peter said to her, trying to block everyone out of his mind, out of his line of sight. "What are you doing? Why are you treating me so poorly? You really want me to leave?" Tinkerbell fluttered down to his shoulder and sighed. "What do you mean leave?" He asked again as he walked them into his treehouse.
Jingle, jingle, jingle.
"I miss her."
Jingle, jingle.
"You sure?"
Jingle.
"I don't want to have to leave her again... I can't force her to come here... she does like school... Tinkerbell I can't kidnap her!" She let out a little shake in confusion. "I know we take kids, but they don't have a real home! They need us..." Peter listened to Tinkerbell talk to him and she was right, the kids needed them both, which meant he needed to get back Darla. "I will go and talk to her, see how things are going, see if she still likes me."
Jingle, jingle, jingle.
"I know it has been a while and I know that I am the worst human being ever for leaving her and," Tink kept yelling at him, convincing him he needed to make it up to Darla, convince her that Neverland should be her home. "I know I've been no fun, but it is hard to be fun, to have fun... exactly, when my mind is somewhere else."
