"I can't do this whole school thing Peter. I don't know what I want to do with my life! I thought I wanted to be a doctor but now I don't know." Darla paced the room frantically. Peter tried and failed at covering a smile, the joy of hearing this, of hearing that she didn't want school anymore made Peter almost float to the ceiling. Darla slapped Peter's arm.
"I need a real job and a real degree Peter!" She moaned but Peter stayed smiling, he nodded even though he disagreed entirely. He didn't have a degree or a real job and he was doing just fine. She was much smarter than him though, and she could do whatever she wanted, as long as he was part of it. "Say something," she demanded moving to the couch where Peter sat and plopped her feet up on his legs.
"What do you want me to say?"
"What do you think?" Peter knew this was a trick question, he has had this problem with the Darlings in the past.
"Do you want to hear what you want to hear or what I really think?"
"Both..." she hesitated moving herself to face Peter. "First, what you think I want to hear though." Peter passed the test, he must be getting better at this whole girl thing. She hooked her arm in his and leaned into his side.
"You should take a year off and explore your options... find out what you really want to do then come back. Reapply or go to a new college."
"Okay and now what you really think," her voice was quizzical and curious.
"Pack up and come to Neverland with me, we can worry about the rest later on in life." Peter dropped his eyes down avoiding her because he knew this wasn't what she wanted. She wanted a normal life, in the 'real world' as she put it at first.
"Thank you Peter," is all she said and flicked on the T.V. Peter had been back for a month and staying on her pull out mattress. When she wasn't at class or studying she was with Peter and she had never been happier... she wanted what he wanted but knew it wasn't realistic.
"Not the stupid vampire show again," Peter complained but wrapped an arm around her as she pressed play.
"What do you mean we have to wait another week? What happened to Stephan?" Peter couldn't believe that he actually started to care about these stupid fictional characters. Darla started to laugh and she toppled off the couch clutching her stomach. "I need the next episode" Peter said pulling her back up next to him.
"No," she giggled "if we finish the show you-" she paused and her laughter broke "-you might not come back."
"I'm shocked that you would even think that!" Peter said sliding off the couch so he was face to face with Darla. He understood where she was coming from because he left for two long dreadful months last time without a sign of coming back, he wasn't going to do that again. "I love you, not the show. I came back for you." Peter had said love, he never said that before. Confusion plastered his face as his eyes locked with her. He meant the words that he had said but he had never expressed them before. Love he thought again, he said love. She looked at Peter her eyes widened
"I love you too," she said simply and kissed him once more. "Then I suppose you can watch the next one." Peter flipped around to tackle her and her giggling continued making everything outside that moment seem as though it didn't even exist.
***********
"A leap year?" Darla's parents asked in disgust. "Why?" Darla wanted to turn around and leave right now, her childhood home had never felt so estranged.
