"My name is Penelope Pan," she placed her poster board up on the white board with Miss. Turners help. "My mother was Darla Jones, she died when she had me."
"I'm so sorry," Miss. Turner interrupted.
"It's okay," Penny said, her eyes free of tears and a small smile on her petite face. "I know she loves me and I have my dad, he tells me of her every day, so I feel like I know her." Miss. Turner looked like she was going to cry but contained herself. "Anyway," Penny extended a finger and pointed at her poster, "my dad is Peter Pan," a few kids laughed at that but Penny didn't listen to them, this was her project and she was going to do it to the best of her ability.
Penny went on to tell them of her time across the country, Neverland didn't come up but she wished to tell them all that she was special. Everyone just thought she was strange and mentally slow. But Penny wasn't slow, in fact she was brighter than anyone else in her class. Penny mentioned all her 'cousins' to which she thought was a good name for the lost boys and girls. She just wanted to do her assignment to the best of her ability, she didn't think that kids could be so mean, she told them basically the truth and they laughed.
"You think your dad is Peter Pan?" Said a twig thin, red lipped, very blonde dyed hair, girl. She was surrounded by her clan of snotty girls. Penny wasn't intimidated by them, she thought they were just curious but their tone said otherwise.
"He is Peter Pan." Penny stated plainly as she picked at her lunch.
"You are so stupid." She stated crossing her arms over her chest, the rest of the girls followed her lead.
"No, my daddy says I'm very smart." Penny was confused, why were they being mean to her? Why didn't they believe her? They scuffed off without another word, they must just be jealous that she had such a cool dad and they didn't.
"Daddy, a girl at school says Neverland isn't real but it is! I tried to explain that you are Peter Pan but she just laughed at me, she's mean!!" Penny called out as she turned around the kitchen looking for her fidget toy.
"Honey, you know we shouldn't talk about Neverland being our other home. They don't understand." Peters hesitation only made him think he was turning his daughter into a liar. Try to think of a way to explain to this beautiful 8 year old that to everyone else Neverland is just a fairy tale.
"I love Neverland daddy and they said you weren't really Peter Pan! Can you believe that?!"
"I love it too Pen and I know I'm Peter and you know I'm Peter, so that's all that matters right?."
"Why can't other people believe in Neverland?"
"Because then everyone would want to go to Neverland," Peter said searching for the right words, "and it wouldn't be as special." That sounded like nice a way to keep the magic and a reason to keep it secret, also so she wouldn't be laughed at and keep all the rude little first graders from hurting his little Penelope. Her face fell slightly but then it lit up.
"She was a jerk anyway and I didn't want to be friends with her but..." she found her fidget and started playing with it. She changed the subject with a bright smile. "We are going to read Peter Pan in class this week!"
"Really?" Peter said with fake amazement in his voice.
"Yeah! But don't worry I won't tell them the real story."
"Your mom didn't think Neverland was real, she didn't think I was really Peter Pan when I first met her." Penny's mouth gaped open.
"WHAT?" she couldn't fathom, her mother, her amazing mother, not believing?
