Peter had thought about how civil Hook had been, and how shy and innocent his son was... maybe Tiger Lily was wrong, maybe she was making things up to be mean, but Peter wasn't willing to take that chance. They want it all.
"Peter, my boy, what are you doing here?" Hook had a smile on his face but his voice was bitter and upset.
"I thought I would pay you a visit, to thank you." Hook rose a brow, cocked his ugly head and leaned back on his heels.
"Thank me?"
"We have been," Peter hesitated, "friends, for a while now and I just wanted to say how kind it was of you to come and see me now that I'm back." Peter stuck out a hand, Hook starred down at it. It was a sign of respect and Peter needed Hook to at least think he was being genuine. Peter held his hand out and waited.
"It is good to see you Peter," Hook said as he shook Peter's hand.
Penny had been in awe of Neverland. Every flower, every sound, every child that came flying out of the sky, Penny couldn't believe that this was her life. Campfires, mermaids, Peter had told her stories so she knew it was real but she didn't know anything could be this beautiful, this fun.
"Does Neverland get snow?" Penny questioned when Peter handed her a new wooden unicorn toy. He had been carving it for the past few weeks in preparation for Penny's Christmas present.
"No, Neverland does not get snow." Peter had never thought about it before. If he wanted snow he would just fly somewhere with snow. Penny pulled at the leaves and revealed the wooden unicorn, her mouth feel open in admiration.
"I love it." She said, kissing the unicorn gently and smiling widely at Peter. "Thank you, daddy."
"You are very welcome Pen." It had been a few months and Peter had never been happier. He loved everything about Neverland. He loved that he finally got to share it with Penny.
"I thought you said it was Christmas?" She questioned as she held her new toy in her small calloused hands.
"It is." Peter thought back to counting days and weeks. He decided that it was a waste of time and bought calendars instead. He had brought calendars from Illinois and set them up in his hut that way he would know days and months and special events like Christmas and Penny's birthday.
"But there is no snow." Penny said, still confused.
"Neverland doesn't get snow, Penny. But it is Christmas..." Peter didn't know how to explain it, she was so smart. She knew that back home, in Illinois, they would make snow angles and cinnamon buns on Christmas morning and they couldn't do that here... unless they could. "Stay put, okay kid?" Penny nodded as she put her unicorn with her other figurines.
"Tiger Lily? I need your help." Peter and Tiger Lily had come to an agreement, in other words they tolerated one another. She stuck her hand on her hip and smirked.
"My help?" She waggled her eyebrows at him.
"Don't give me that look, I need to make Christmas perfect for Penny because this is her first Christmas in Neverland." Tiger Lily's face dropped and she nodded.
"What can I do to help." She said begrudgingly, but she loved Penny and would have helped no matter what.
"I need to make snow."
"Daddy, can I come out yet!" Penny opened up the door slightly before remembering her unicorn on the side table. "I am bored." She called out, marching towards the door.
"Come on out!" Tiger Lily replied, a smile on her face.
"You are enjoying helping. You like being useful." Tiger Lily scoffed at Peter's comment. "You like being needed." Tiger Lily gave Peter the side eye but stayed silent as Penny emerged through the door of their hut. Penny's eyes went wide and her mouth dropped open as her hand clenched tighter around her unicorn.
"SNOW!" She said in bewilderment. "HOW?" Peter and Tiger Lily glanced around the camp only to see the other lost kids wandering closer in amazement. "HOW?" She repeated as she fell to the ground making a snow angels. But as she felt the ground under her, Penny noticed that it wasn't cold. Penny gave Peter a confused but happy look.
"It's flowers, flower petals." Peter pointed up and all the lost kids tumbled to the ground scooping up petals and trying to make snowballs as Penny starred up at the sky. Peter and Tiger Lily raided the forest for all the white flowers and suspended them from the trees with rope and fairy dust. With each shake of a branch the petals broke free from their streams and fell onto the ground, coating the dirt path with a layer of white.
"Flowers." Penny itemized and continued to make 'snow angels' with the other lost kids.
"You have been playing all day, you need to eat something." Peter called to Penny frustrated.
"Fun is mandatory, food is secondary." Penny replied as she swung down from a vine landing in front of Peter.
"Come on Penny!" The lost kids called.
"My troops are waiting Father." Penny said sternly, placing her hands on her hips. "I have no time for such times."
"Such things as food?" Peter laughed, when did she start preferring adventures to sweets?
"PENNY!" They screamed from above in the trees and deep within the forest.
"Father-"
"Fine, but please eat this." He thrust an apple in her direction and she took a bite as she struggled up the tree.
Jingle, jingle.
"Tink," Peter smiled as Tinkerbell approached him, landing on his shoulder. "Everything is perfect here." Peter announced. "I don't think I ever want to go back again."
Jingle, jingle.
"But I have to." Tinkerbell's light dimmed as she examined Peter's frowning face. "Darla's parents will be so worried. We were supposed to be gone a year and I'm sure they are upset about missing Christmas and Penny's birthday..."
Jingle, jingle. Tink replied.
"If it was just Penny and I..." Peter shook his head troubled. "If it was just us it would be different. But Penny has a lot of people that really love her... we have to go back." Tinkerbell nodded, understanding but she was going to miss them. She enjoyed having Peter back in Neverland. "Keep an eye on everyone, keep them safe until I return. Alright Tink?"
Peter hadn't ran into the pirates since that first week and Tiger Lily didn't come to inform him of any advances in the pirates plan. The pirates didn't come by the land for the rest of Peter's year long hiatus. Peter was able to leave with a smile on his face. He was confident that Neverland was safe from Hook's reign for a while at least, so it was time to go back.
Despite the lost kids protests and Penny's now very vocal argument to stay forever Peter packed them up and they headed off. He took Penny to the tree tops before they left and took a single picture of her, sitting on the clouds. He had a matching one of Darla he kept in his notebook. It was hard not to see Darla in everything Penny did and said, it was hard to not see her when Darla had been such a huge part of Neverland. No matter where he went he wouldn't be able to put Darla in his past, she was and forever would be his present and future due to Penelope.
